Bronwyn MacArran was a proud Scot. Stephen Montgomery was one of the hated English.
He came to Scotland as a conqueror, saw her beauty, and was vanquished. But still she would abhor him.
She owned a temper hot enough to forge the armors of battle or inflame a valiant soldier's passion. Yet still she would resist him.
She became his reason to live, his reason to love. And still she would deny him.
But while clan fought clan, while brother took up sword against brother and the highlands ran with blood - their destiny was made...and this mighty warrior pledged himself to his woman's pride, her honor, and her name - and made of their love a torch to burn through the ages.

Yes! I love highland stories, and this is my first audible listen from this author, and narrator. I felt both were excellent! There was more story telling, and less explicit sex scenes, so I was able to listen aloud without having to hurray and put on headphones!
I actually did!
Definitely looking forward to listening to the rest in the series when available!
Did not like the heroine's character. She was childish and so frustrating that at times I was not sure how much of it I could take. She had nothing to recommend her except her supposed great looks and body. Is that all it takes for the hero to fall for her and take what she dishes out? I am a woman and I had enough by the end of the first hour. Not sure how to say it, but even though I did not dislike the book, but I did not like it either and it was solely due to the heroine's temper tantrums and childish manners. I am glad it is over.
Sassy dialogue, humor, and a great reader are important to me.
Awaited Great Classic. Note: listen on new 1.25x speed to get the full effect of this classic.
If you are new to this author, but love the older historical classics, this series is great.
Since the great Katherine Widdoweiss isn't on audible, the 4 Velvet brothers are a wonderful classic revisited. Many of us classic core historical romance fans have waited over 20 yrs for this series. Stephen will steal your heart. Remember, 20 years ago, men were men. This is not FSOG material, but a true classic historical.
Morag steals this story. Stephen is a dream. So glad author paired with Ms Zackman as few other readers could bring this saga series to life. Ms Zackman's Kyra Davis/Sophie Katz series is great for modern light mystery romance.
Of course! This is a classic not to be missed #3 is the weakest, and the Velvet Angel is not as great as the opening chapters. If you start, buy #1 or 2, if you are hooked, then buy the rest.
Really enjoyed Velvet Promise (book 1) and Highland Velvet (book 2) please lets have books 3 and 4
I do enjoy the audio version more than the print due to the great narration provided by Gabra Zackman. Her Scottish accent adds to the narration and the humor of this original novel which I loved when originally published in 1982. Historical Romances stand up better than current day novels. Historicals are not impacted by current inventions like PCs, cell phones, smoking taboos, etc.
My favorite moments of Highland Velvet occur when Bronwyn demonstrates her loyalty to her clan showing her strength of character, willing to sacrifice her love when necessary. I especially like her interaction with her future sisters-in-law.
Gabra's humorous portrayal of Steven Montgomery was my favorite often making me laugh aloud accurately interpreting Deveraux's characters.
An epic Love Story.
Author, Jude Deveraux has been writing great love stories for more than 30 years and she continues today. I have been reading her books since her original book, Black Lyon. I am enjoying having today's narrators' interpretations of these classics. I hope eventually Audible.com will have all of her novels available.
This is one of my all time favorite series. I am sure I will listen to it again. I am hoping the other books are on there way! I prefer it when they start with the first book rather than the second in the series but these can be read as a stand alone.
I enjoy the time period. The characters are always well developed. I always like strong female characters.
I wished they had started with Velvet Promise. I am looking forward to the other books in the series to come to audible.
I read the first book in the Velvet series 'Velvet Promise" which was very good. This book is the 2nd in the series . I think the heroine's personality is what contributed to my lower rating. Her character seemed too abrasive and mean for my taste. The story and plot was well developed.
She still surprises me and I have read every book. I have listen to many as well I prefer some readers to others but Zackman does a good job. Can't wait to read- listen to the next one.
I almost never write reviews but I am truly upset I wasted a credit on this book. I love Nude Deveraux but this book is excruciatingly slow. It lacks action and the main characters go around and around in the same circle trying to usurp power from one another. The narrator is dull and lacks emotion to the point of making my stomach turn. I felt like I was in a Charlie Brown cartoon and the teacher was talking wa wa wah. I can't finish the book which is rare. Save yourself an upset stomach and a credit.
