Publisher's summary

He's a duke. He's a mathematical genius. He can't talk and he's locked in a lunatic asylum. Only a modest Quaker girl can reach him, but when she helps him to escape, she's swept into his glittering aristocratic world, her life torn apart by his desperate attempt to save himself.

Laura Kinsale personally chose the exceptional talent of Nicholas Boulton to narrate her classic romance Flowers from the Storm - cited by readers of The Washington Post and Glamour magazine as "one of the greatest love stories of all time" - creating a fresh and unique work that brings all the power and intensity of the original to audio.

Different kind of romance!

If you are expecting the usual romance you are in for a surprise because here the hero has a debilitating condition. While strong he is very flawed. This adds many obstacles to the characters. Maddie the main character is a Quaker and she has her own inner conflict to overcome. The performance was excellent as well. This was the first book I have listened to by Laura Kinsale and I look forward to reading or hearing others in the future!

A glimpse into the world of stroke victims

An Interesting novel about one man's struggle to be understood after a stroke leaves him unable to speak or communicate with others. His unfathomable frustration turns to anger and lands him in an asylum. This young and brilliant man is trapped in his own body trying to make himself understood while orchestrating an escape from his living hell.

A love story

I love many different types of books but I do not review them often. This book was quite frankly amazing. Between the writing and the spectacular performance of Nicholas Boulton I listened to it in 2 days and only stopped when I had to. It's rare to have a book that can sweep you away into another place and time but this one did that for me. The supporting cast is just as colorful and full of life as the main characters. The description isn't what made me listen. As a matter of fact I was pretty sure I wasn't going to like it. Give it a chance and I hope you enjoy!

The Regency period deserves this intelligent story

I haven't read much of this author although I'm intrigued by early 19c England. The treatment of ( at the time) poorly understood organic brain
damage is actually slightly sugar coated. Psychiatric patients are brutalized today, let alone two hundred years ago!

The narrator's bravura performance lifts this book above its already considerable originality and sweetness.

Some great heart stopping moments, and a blessedly happy ending. And I enjoyed the balance of Quaker inflexibility and aristocratic rigidity. Informed treatment of severe and unpredictable deficits post stroke.- the neuroscience is well researched.

Amazing story. Perfect narration.

This is one of Kinsale’s best.
The story is long, evoking every emotion, from heartache to joy, and tears to humor.
Characterization impressive. Kinsale has the knack and wisdom to portray the emotions of both the hero and the heroine, their thoughts and struggles, making the story the richer for it. A talent of which many good authors fall short.
It’s a love story, not formulaic. I highly recommend it.

Narration does full justice to a fabulous story

As I read this mesmerizing work I was gripped by the characters and their story. When I finished, I could not let it go. As I thought about listening to the audio version I pondered what kind of narrator it needed. I decided that it needed a male voice. When I found this on Audible I was delighted. Then I listened. Nicholas Boulton’s narration was ideal! Getting Christian’s speech difficulties right was crucial to an audio version and Boulton’s rendering was spot on.

Brilliant writing

This story is profound and beautiful. I would put the writing and the theme of love right up on a high pedestal with Charles Dickens and Jane Austin. Bravo to Laura Kinsale!

A Romantic Achievement

The second reading (or listening) of this book has only inspired me to greater appreciation. Both hero and heroine achieved a growth only possible from great love and faith following periods of almost uninsurable pain and stress. The book was written, edited, and narrated to perfection. I don’t believe that I have ever read a better book.
