An immortal war has been brewing in the darkness … and now one woman has stumbled into the shadows.
Chicago private investigator Kira Graceling should have just kept on walking. But her sense of duty refused to let her ignore the moans of pain coming from inside a warehouse just before dawn. Suddenly she finds herself in a world she’s only imagined in her worst nightmares.
At the center is Mencheres, a breathtaking Master vampire who thought he’d seen it all. Then Kira appears—this fearless, beautiful human who braved death to rescue him. Though he burns for her, keeping Kira in his world means risking her life. Yet sending her away is unthinkable.
With danger closing in, Mencheres must choose either the woman he craves or embracing the darkest magic to defeat an enemy bent on his eternal destruction.

“In the second spin-off from the best-selling Night Huntress series, Frost produces a tale that is wildly romantic as well as action-packed. If Frost keeps this up, fans will need to build more keeper shelves!” (Romantic Times)
Romantic, Thrilling, Action
The most memorable moment was when Mencare' was ordered to kill Kira.
I have listened to mostly all of her series , this one did not disappoint in any way.
I love Ms. Frost's vampire universe and this is an excellent story with the main character getting turned and dealing with her new abilities. Great romance as usual and some fun twists.
I really enjoyed this listen. I thought the main characters were well suited, I liked how she saved him from himself and I look forward to many more interactions with Menchares and Keira.
I've "read" a few other books thus far, and I loved the intensity of this story. There was passion, there was a plot. I couldn't put it down.
I couldn't help but fall in love with Kiera. Her character was so tough and smart, but Mencari made her a teen again. It was beautiful to feel her falling in love. It was a book I truly felt.
Her voices were not always my favorite, but each character had their own voice signature, and she maintained them so flawlessly, that by the end, I couldn't imagine it without her.
I started listening while driving back and forth places. As I got past the first few chapters, I found myself pulling out my ear buds and tucking my phone into my shirt so that I could even listen while trying on clothes and grocery shopping. I was beginning to feel as tho the people around me were there simply to interrupt my wonderful story! At the end, I couldn't shut it off even to charge my phone, so I laid next to the wall while it finished!
I love all the Frost books but this one in particular has made me want to listen to it again and again. From the very start you are drawn in and immersed completely. My only caution is that you will not want to stop listening... and you have to sleep sometime :-)
Okay first of all this is a biased review as I love Jeaniene Frost!!!! Her characters are seem so real and her storyline always keeps me on my toes!!!
I have enjoyed this series and the world the author has created immensely. This book however went to far when it came to the frequent sex scenes. I don't know if the publisher pushed her for more racy content or her mind was just in the gutter while writing this. When I found myself getting bored after another long encounter between our two protagonists I gave up and started fast forwarding through them. This book would have been just fine and missed nothing by skipping most of these scenes. They didn't add anything, just seemed to be there for the titillation factor. Besides that, another interesting tale told by Jeaniene Frost
If you are a fan of the Night Huntress series with Cat and Bones, then you've met Bone's Grandsire (what a hoot) before. This is Mencheres' book and the events take place after "Destined For an Early Grave" (Night Huntress series) and "First Drop of Crimson" (Night Huntress World novel). I have always found Mencheres fascinating. He is powerful beyond belief and his tragic love story was something I wanted to see rectified.
I loved this book! It is one of my favorites of the entire series (including Night Huntress). Mencheres was exactly what I expected and more and Kiera was a perfect match. Their chemistry comes flying off the pages and you are cheering for their HEA the entire time. The overarching plot as well as the love story is well done and moves very smoothly although the ending is rather abrupt. I wish there was at least an epilogue or something, anything. I really wanted more Kiera and Mencheres.
Tavia Gilbert narrates all the Night Huntress, Night Prince, and the Night Huntress World series. I like that the producers stayed with the same narrator even if the characters are not the same. The consistency in pronunciation, accents, and voices help the listener dive into the story without a hitch and I've read other comments that didn't like the way Gilbert does Bones' voice and accent, but I don't mind it so much. It does hamper his masculinity a bit, but his witty humor fits well with the accent.
I think the story of the oldest, most powerful vampire needs to be epic. This book, while a good read, wasn't as memorable or grand as the character deserved.
