Publisher's summary

Colin MacAlistair understands that the worst nightmares are conjured from truth. He is living proof of it. After learning a disturbing family secret, he flees England with one goal in mind: amass enough wealth to prove himself worthy of his beloved's devotion. Over the course of three long and bitter years, Colin indeed amassed a small fortune but his success came at a steep price...his soul.

Eve Weston's faith in Colin was shattered by his disappearance and her life turned upside down by the horrific events that followed. She survives, becoming strong, independent...and betrothed. When Colin returns at last, Eve is determined to remind him of what he so callously discarded by forsaking her and ensure he will regret it until his dying day. However, in this battle of wills, neither can deny the powerful passion between them.

As their attraction grows, so does Colin's intent to discover Eve's true feelings for him. Duty be damned, time has taught Colin to be ruthless and to fight for what he wants at all costs. Through his years in hell, he has become a master of it and there is much to hide. Danger looms as Colin and Eve face their feelings for one another. Will their love survive the evil that seeks to destroy them?

Good Book

Colin and Eve are good characters. What happens to them is not unusual, but the story along the way gets more interesting. On to book 3.

Good Story and narration.

I enjoyed this story. I think it was a bit better than the first story in the series. Less angst and misunderstanding. I liked Eve and Colin. They were both strong characters and had some good chemistry together. There was a couple of nicely written sex scenes. Not over the top just nice.

The story line and plot was good. Interesting and there was a little bit of mayhap with a villain which is always good to have in a story. There is lots of dialogue. However, there were a bit too many internal thoughts going on which brought the story down a star. A little less internal thoughts is better in my opinion.

As for the narration, I am a Susan Duerden fan. She reads with emotion, the men sound like men, the women sound lovely and everyone gets their own distinct voice. She has a nice reading voice too.

I got this book as a free read with my KU subscription and 1.99 audible version, so it was a great deal for sure!

Narration ruined the book!

The story was good, the characters kept my attention but the narration was so bad I just couldn't finish the book. If I wasn't having trouble with my eyes, I would have just downloaded the book & really enjoyed it.

Couldn't finish

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

If the reader has not whispered the entire story and sounded completely fretful.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

The story was okay. I just couldn't listed to the reader.

How could the performance have been better?

Stop the breathy whispering. Use an emotion other than distress.
