Publisher's summary

Diana Gabaldon's fans will be delighted to find Jamie and Claire as spirited and endearing as ever in this fourth installment of this magnificent saga. Romance, history, and time travel blend once again as the couple builds a new life together in the wilderness of pre-Revolutionary America.

Twice Claire has used an ancient stone circle to travel back to the 18th century. The first time she found love with a Scottish warrior but had to return to the 1940s to save their unborn child. The second time, 20 years later, she reunited with her lost love but had to leave behind the daughter that he would never see. Now Brianna, from her 1960s vantage point, has found a disturbing obituary and will risk everything in an attempt to change history.

Davina Porter's narrative talent adds a special vibrance and resonance to Gabaldon's complex, colorful characters.

Critic reviews

"Gabaldon's range is impressive, whether she's evoking the rawness of colonial America, the cozy clutter of a modern Scottish parsonage, the lusts of the body or the yearnings of the spirit. Her legion of fans will love diving into this ocean of romance." ( Publishers Weekly)

Another great one!

I enjoyed the love story between Claire and Roger as much as Claire and Jamie.

Spellbinding

45 hours was not long enough. Diana Gabaldon's books get better with each one I read. Davina Porter is magical. Her voice clearly creates separate characters. All I wanted to do is listen. Better than watching tv.

Onto the next one

A great listen just as the other books in the series. I love Jamie and Claire but growing to love Roger Wakefield Mackenzie and Brianna too. All of the characters are robust and flavorful. Very good. The only reason
that I have it 4 stars is because it took time to get to know the new characters and feel them and for them. Now, I'm all in.

Absolutely Obsessed with this series

I loved this book but I must admit the begining of the book was a little hard to bite. Marsalis wasn't mentioned for the first few chapters and it was irritating. Their travel from Georgia to Aunt Jarcosta's was slow moving and the meeting of the Indians was almost unbearable but once they settled on Fraser's Ridge and Brianna went through the stones the book was throughly enjoyable. I laughed, I cried, and fell in love with the Fraser Clan all over again.

Not the best...but some redeeming qualities

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I have recommended the first three books in the series unabashedly, but I'd hesitate on this one. I am about 2/3 through, and even though I enjoyed the first half of the book, I'm starting to get annoyed at this point.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Brianna (sp?) is frustrating as hell, and I am kind of annoyed she went through to find her parents. She's a mess, and not using her head at all. At least Claire is tempered a bit (she fits better in the 18th century, and knows her "place" a little better at this point).

What about Davina Porter’s performance did you like?

She's the best. Everything.

Any additional comments?

The whole Roger/Brianna thing is killing me. Just...if you read it, you'll understand. This book really gets away from Jamie and Claire's relationship (not totally, but it's not the whole thing). They had more time in the earlier part of the novel, and some really good conversations, actually, but as soon as the whole cast of characters was interacting with each other, relationships get muddy, and everyone is in a fit all the time. I hope the last 20 chapters bring me some relief from my annoyance.
