I've never been so confused by a book...but not in a bad way! I restarted this audiobook 3 times when I thought I had missed something because I was so confused. In the end I completely understood why I was lost. This book took me on an emotional ride from the first chapter. I fell in love, my heart broke then I fell in love all over again. It took me a day to finally write a review because I needed to wrap my head around it and decide if I loved it or hated it! In the end, I loved it! It is a story about true love, I love that the author gave us the past and present so there was nothing left up in the air in the end.
This is my first book by this author but it will not be my last, especially if they all come out on audio! I was very excited to see book 2 is about Ben <3 I hope it is narrated by the same people because they were perfect. I love Erin Mallon and this was my first Jason Clarke and I'm excited to listen to more!
I love to multi-task whenever possible and audible allows me to keep up my voracious reading appetite while doing other things!
Okay, I am still blowing my nose and wiping tears from my face. Every once in a while, I like to read a book that will provide a good cathartic cry session and Cruel & Beautiful delivers. What an incredible tale of epic love and loss that still meets a HEA.
This book is told from the POV of Cate Forbes and narrated nearly entirely by Erin Mallon. I've listened to books performed by Erin before, and she takes some getting used to. At first, I found her voice to be a bit too breathy and her inflections tend to make many sentences sound like a question or hesitation. Once you get past that, she does a good job. I like the way she voices male characters. Jason Clarke narrates only the epilogue and handles it quite competently.
The publisher's summary warns that the book will "leave you in the dark with questions." That is no lie. The prologue will hook you, and from there you will go on a journey through the past and present alternating nearly every chapter. I spent 3/4 of the book feeling frustrated by all of the back and forth and I had nearly decided it was an unnecessary gimmick. I was very, very wrong. You'll have to be patient - this book is 14+ hours long, but so worth the time. The reveal was SPECTACULAR.
My only complaint came down to the sex scenes. Simply put, there were too many of them. After a while, the scenes felt a bit repetitive and boring. Less would have been more in this case. Fortunately, the copious sexual encounters didn't impact the plot.
This author team of A.M. Hargrove and Terri E. Laine were new to me. I would definitely read another book by this duo. Well worth my credit! This is one of my favourite books of 2016.
The title of this book captures the essence of the story as well as the emotions I felt once it ended. it's a cruel but beautiful story. Well written, lovely characters. Even though I thought I knew how it was going to end ( I did and didn't) I was still swallowed up in every emotion. Definitely would recommend.
I absolutely loved this book. It was very hard not to skip forward to find out what happened in the end. Fair warning, this book will make you bawl your eyes out, so have your tissues ready.
Wow wow wow....I love books that are unpredictable! The whole time you're trying to make sense of it in your mind and then you find out you weren't even close to knowing what was going on. Such a sad yet captivating tale and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it. The only thing that I didn't like was that they list Jason Clarke as a narrator, when in fact he only narrated the epilogue. (If I remember correctly) I know it was just a tiny little fragment that he narrated. That made me sad because I love Jason's voice and he's the reason I chose this listen. I love Kirsten too, but it needed more Jason. Overall great story
I usually consider romance novels as mindless indulgences but this one was emotional and sexy all at once. I highly recommend it.
This book is amazing. This story heart wrenching at times, and certainly had some sexy parts. I had every emotion (esp. cryibg) while listening to this story, so please be prepared you most likely will cry. Absolutely loved it.
I read reviews all the time before buying and it's worth the credit listen carefully and you won't be confused
Wish there were more sex scenes
Confession #1: I've had this book on my TBR, bookshelf, and kindle for a year!
Confession #2: I maybe was a bit afraid to start it. I mean look at that cover! That title!! It is sure to be cruel to my heart!!
Well, Last week I decided to download the audiobook version and started listening... Yes, it was cruel, but oh so beautiful!! First I have to say that the narrators were amazing. Audiobook is definitely the way to go, that was a great decision on my part. Waiting a year to read this... not such a good decision!
I loved the way that while the story went back and forth between the past and present day I was constantly guessing and feeling almost off balance with not knowing where I was being taken.
The story was so emotional that I will have to add Confession #3: Yes, I was bawling. Listening to the audiobook while driving on the highway may have been another bad decision ;-)
Also, along with the emotions was humor and heat in wonderful balance! I will never look at strawberries and whipped cream the same way again! And don't get me started on "sex on a graham cracker" and Louise!!!
I'm so glad that I discovered this writing team and I can't wait to discover more of their writing!!
I read many of the reviews prior to listening to this book. I can definitely see why many said it'll make you want to skip pages so you can get what's about to happen. This book makes me want to fall in love all over again.
It's true, you can fall in love again. It's a true testament to the vowels that marriage is about. Through sickness and health...
