Editorial reviews

Laurann Dohner's vision of an intergalactic future, with its fleshed-out history and cultural tensions, sets the stage for dark master/slave fantasies to play out in unexpected ways. Mindy Kennedy's performance captures both the rawness and the sweetness of the emotional roller coaster Mira and Flint are forced to ride as their different worlds collide in equal parts pleasure and pain.

Sure to satisfy fans of Dohner's New Species and Mating Heat series, Burning Up Flint is a quick and sexy listen that's difficult to pause as it teases listeners with the question of whether this budding cyborg-human romance can survive.

Publisher's summary

Flint is tall, gorgeous and dangerous. He’s a cyborg - the absolute ultimate alpha male. He takes what he wants and holds what is his. Mira is his now. He takes her aboard his ship and has her branded with his mark. He captured her, owns her, and she will serve his every need.

Mira is instantly drawn to Flint, fascinated by his seductive appeal. The sex between them is smoking hot. Until she finds out he is a breeder, contracted to a dozen cyborg women, and she is no more than a possession.

Mira won’t share her cyborg and she belongs to no one - not even to a man who has captured her heart. She doesn’t know if cyborgs feel... anything. Can Flint love her? Mira is determined to find out, no matter how much trouble she makes for the big guy.

Reader Advisory: This book contains a sexy, voyeuristic bondage scene in which Flint generously demonstrates his sizzling skills for the benefit of another cyborg.

BLANTANT MINORITY ABSENCE

Would you consider the audio edition of Burning Up Flint to be better than the print version?

I've never read the print version, but this whole series is awesome. Each one grabs your interest in the beginning and holds it until the end...causing you to buy the next one immediately. Love the alpha characters, and the fact that each heroin can kick a.. or has a mouth. Either way they stand up to these big strong powerful hot passionate men. 😉

Who was your favorite character and why?

The narrator is so outstanding that EVERY character is interesting. Even the secondary characters make you look forward to their story.

Any additional comments?

CONCERN: Ms. Donner seems to go overboard to inform and remind readers/listeners that these stories are not intended for minorities to read or enjoy. It is in the repeated references to red hair/green eyed or blond hair blue eyed women. It isn't t just a mention from time to time, it s constant, seemingly to ensure you understand.I have read and listened to many stories with white male and female main characters that does not give that idea. Now...why a five star. In spite of what I consider a racial snub, they are well written, wonderfully performed, hot attention grabbing stories, and I would buy (use credit for) another one.

Loving Flint

Need me a cyborg for my own. Love these males that are carrying and so sexy. Clint was wonderful. Laurann does a wonderful job of visual story building and the narrator is fantastic in the male and female roles. A very sexy audio book. Not miss it.

OMG! ~ 5 Smokin` Hot 5 Stars !

Wow! Laurann Dohner knows how to do erotic stories perfectly!

I'll admit, in the beginning I was on the fence on this story; it was borderline "forced seduction" or "rape." Since I am very sensitive to rape situations, I had to see how the story progressed before I either decided I loved it or hated it. In the end, I fell in love with the story!

Flint is a cyborg and does not understand human emotions. He used to be property so in his mind, when he took Mira, brands her and makes her his property, this is just how it is and she has to accept it. I could see how some would find this offensive but Flint in is own way, did what Mira to be comfortable, happy and in the end fell in love with her.

But Oh My, the sex scenes... wow.....just....WOW.

I will definitely continue this series, but this is one those stories that may not be for everyone. It's a very erotic sci-fantasy slightly on the dark side but at the core does have a decent plot.

Interesting Premise...

Promising start to a new series by Laurann Dohner. I'm not quite sure if I like the beginning of this series as much as the New Species series; but, I am willing to give the second book, Steel, a chance. It takes a little getting use to this space premise.

I kind of liked Flint in this story. He is again another lead character who simply cuts right to the chase so there is no misinterpretation.

Of course L D doesn't disappoint in the erotic romance department. She is true to form with this one. Mindy Kennedy does a great job narrating the story.

It is a pleasant listen for those who enjoy steamy romances.

OK start to new series

Would you recommend Burning Up Flint to your friends? Why or why not?

I'd skip this one if I had to do it over. Just ok, not the best for sure. Actually got this one and Taunting Krell at the same time, or probably would not have continued.Have listened to all, least favorite is Melting Iron and Haunting Blackie. Don't like either male, not a bit. Iron is introduced in the first book. Hated Haunting Blackie. Another one who has been in several books, and then is "redeemed". His behavior in Kissing Steel is UN-redeemable in my book.

However, Taunting Krell, Redeeming Zorus, Stealing Coal are the BEST, Love them all and have re-listened to them all multiple times. I love Krell.

Hated Zorus and almost didn't listen to his book, but so glad I did. He was redeemed.

Kissing Steel and Touching Ice are good, better than Burning up Flint.

Agree that Species series is better, and have re listened to many of them over and over.

Which character – as performed by Mindy Kennedy – was your favorite?

Mindy does a good job on woman voices, but some of the men voices are painful.Blackie was the worst.

Astounding Series

Would you consider the audio edition of Burning Up Flint to be better than the print version?

The audio edition of this entire series is all I've done. My work doesn't permit me to read the print version as I like to have something to do while working, audio is perfect for me

What was one of the most memorable moments of Burning Up Flint?

If you like the Laurann Dohner as a writer, and I do. Her cyborg series is sexy, exciting, and fun. Flint is a dream come true as a cyborg

Have you listened to any of Mindy Kennedy’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have and I like the job that she does in bring this book and characters to life.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I'm pretty sure that I did

Any additional comments?

After listening to "Burning up Flint" I had to buy the rest of the series. They did not disappoint. GREAT !GREAT !GREAT !READ

Flint

Would you consider the audio edition of Burning Up Flint to be better than the print version?

I have not read the book.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Flint Tough, Gentle and I'd trust him with my life.

Mira realized what a good person Flint.

What about Mindy Kennedy’s performance did you like?

She has a good voice, you can distinguish voices from Mira to Flint.

Any additional comments?

I personally would like a male voice for the male. They are so masculine, they need a deep male voice and the women needs women's voices.

Formulaic Spicy Exactly What You Expect

I think listening to these books are better enjoyed when you set your expectations. Similar to when you sit down for a Hallmark, looking to be entertained more than experiencing some kind of world ending story telling. That said there are far worse in this genre and some better. I love Dohner's Mate Set. I could not get through book one of New Species or VLG. Both are very formulaic, there is enough story that it doesn't feel like total smut, but not far off. Clearly the sex is what is driving the whole narrative, and the author writes a good sex scene. TRIGGER WARNING attempted rape is discussed in the story. Also with this genre there is the level of really no choice for most women, essentially be the mate of a barbarian or be a sex slave or sold off. It is odd to feel like wow lucked out because at least my barbarian and I have great sex but definitely not a situation where it feels like complete autonomous choice, just a bright side of orgasm in essentially a complete wreck of a world. This makes the volumes of this series seem hard to tell apart if you quickly read the summaries for all the stories they are almost all identical. So these are hard for me to binge because I get tired so quickly of the one note nature of it. But hey if you want the same meal everyday cause it's your favorite meal go for it. That meal is big alpha man with almost zero personality (think Drax from Guardians of the Galaxy), weak "irrational" woman who in her show of independence and spirit will make nonsensical decisions that put her in danger that the alpha will save her from but create conflict that the woman did not obey him, monogamy, only male/female pairing, male loves pleasuring woman and gives woman better orgasms that she ever has before, instant love, WAY quick easy HEA no matter how insane the odds were stacked against the couple. The end of this story I was eye rolling so hard at the main female and her ridiculous antics it was painful. I will return to the series but need breaks between. I enjoy Ruby Dixon's Ice Planet Barbarian series for actually being able to inject humor and more realistic characters and world building that feels more fleshed out. Dohner's males are big, horny, angry, possessive, cold. And yes always big man and tiny fragile woman. The narration is well done much better than other stories for sure. I will say I would enjoy if they had a solid male narrator for these stories but I know they are already long completed so no hope for that. When you are in the mood for this style the book delivers but as I said I would mix this up with others so you don't get bogged down in the sameness of it.
