Editorial reviews

Laurann Dohner's vision of an intergalactic future, with its fleshed-out history and cultural tensions, sets the stage for dark master/slave fantasies to play out in unexpected ways. Mindy Kennedy's performance captures both the rawness and the sweetness of the emotional roller coaster Mira and Flint are forced to ride as their different worlds collide in equal parts pleasure and pain.

Sure to satisfy fans of Dohner's New Species and Mating Heat series, Burning Up Flint is a quick and sexy listen that's difficult to pause as it teases listeners with the question of whether this budding cyborg-human romance can survive.

Publisher's summary

Flint is tall, gorgeous and dangerous. He’s a cyborg - the absolute ultimate alpha male. He takes what he wants and holds what is his. Mira is his now. He takes her aboard his ship and has her branded with his mark. He captured her, owns her, and she will serve his every need.

Mira is instantly drawn to Flint, fascinated by his seductive appeal. The sex between them is smoking hot. Until she finds out he is a breeder, contracted to a dozen cyborg women, and she is no more than a possession.

Mira won’t share her cyborg and she belongs to no one - not even to a man who has captured her heart. She doesn’t know if cyborgs feel... anything. Can Flint love her? Mira is determined to find out, no matter how much trouble she makes for the big guy.

Reader Advisory: This book contains a sexy, voyeuristic bondage scene in which Flint generously demonstrates his sizzling skills for the benefit of another cyborg.

Some People Don't Get This Book

And that's okay. Not every reader gets every book, and I'm happy to listen to all opinions and engage in debate on books (my favorite topic). But I have to disagree with readers who think Ms. Dohner writes "rape". She doesn't.

In the romance genre, it's called "forced seduction" -- and whether some readers like it or not, it's a HUGE female fantasy and a sub-genre of romance all on its own. And Ms. Dohner is the current reigning queen of the genre. Remember this book is erotic fantasy romance and the book is fantastic.

All I care about is whether or not I enjoy the books and the actions therein, and I do. And I don't psychoanalyze myself for it. Because it IS fantasy. I don't read romance books to learn an author's moral stances or lessons on politics, religion, etc. I read nonfiction for that. I read romances for the completely unrealistic happy-ever-afters; for a chance to escape. And for a chance to indulge in a taboo fantasy (like forced seduction) in the only safe place I can do so...within the pages of a book.

Rock on, Ms. Dohner. Thanks for leaving the perpetually pregnant, destitute heroines and the billionaire heroes to Harlequin writers, instead giving us books we're not supposed to want but can't wait to listen too!

Mindy Kennedy was outstanding with the delivery of the story.

Good start to the series :)

3-3.5 stars

This was a good story. I liked Mira and Flint and enjoyed their story.

Mira is a human that works in space (in a futuristic time) as a sales rep. She travels around a lot and doesn't have time for friends and especially not boyfriends. She has family but doesn't see them much as they’re rich and powerful and not much of the feeling types. Mira is travelling back to Earth after a sales trip when her shuttle is attacked.

Flint is a cyborg. His people were created by humans in labs many years ago. The humans refused to give cyborgs any rights though and denied them free will. The humans feared the cyborgs would revolt against the humans for their bad treatment and decided to kill all the cyborgs. Some escaped though and they found a planet to call their own and are building their own civilization. The cyborgs have laws in place in their new civilization about breeding because there are so few of them but not all are thrilled by the requirements this puts on them.

Flint is one of the cyborgs that attack Mira’s shuttle. Mira’s surprised to see a cyborg as she thought they had all been killed by the Earth government year before. She’s actually happy to see live cyborgs because she thought what was done to them was horrible. Flint and his crew decide to take what they can from the shuttle but Mira wasn't expecting to be one of the things taken. This ends up saving her life as the shuttle explodes later (no, the cyborgs didn't do it). Flint takes Mira on his ship and says that she now belongs to him. Mira is rather freaked by everything and fears what Flint wants. When he asks her to strip she’s even more shocked and wonders if cyborgs have sex. Mira soon finds out that they do as Flint binds her to his bed and proceeds to perform oral on her until she doesn't want to resist him anymore. Mira’s actually starting to think maybe Flint really likes her and she finds that she kind of likes him. She decides that she’s not terribly unhappy with her situation but this ends up being a bit too soon. Flint takes her to the ship doctor to have her checked and have her “branded” with Flint’s markings. Mira isn't happy about this when it becomes apparent that they’re property marks and she doesn't like being viewed as property. It gets even worse when she realizes that as his property, Flint could share her with other cyborgs if he wanted and she’s rather horrified by that.

Unfortunately, Flint doesn't do very well at reassuring Mira that she won’t be shared and that he feels something more than ownership of her. This prompts Mira to plan out an escape. While most of the cyborgs are busy with a raid, Mira manages to get in to an escape pod of the ship and take off. Since the pod doesn't have a lot of fuel Mira’s escape doesn't get her too far and then she has to deal with Flint and company recapturing her. Thing don’t go well after the rescue though as Flint is really mad (and rather hurt) by Mira trying to escape. Flint doesn't handle things well and makes a rash decision that causes some problems between Flint and Mira and almost splits them up. They manage to get past that but still have some difficulties once Mira arrives on the cyborg homes planet (called Garden) and learns more about the planet, including some about its breeding laws. This causes more difficulties between Flint and Mira that they have to work through. Fortunately, there ends up being a way to work things out so Mira and Flint can be happy together and they end the story settling in to their HEA together.

This was an enjoyable story. I liked Mira and Flint and their story was pretty much what I expected. It was good but not great. I think what caused me to not rate it higher is because it seemed like things between Mira and Flint when to extremes at the drop of a hat. One moment she’s upset and wants to die rather than go on and then suddenly it’s alright. I understand that the story had the ups and downs to cause this type of behavior but I think it would have worked better for me if there had been more buildup and wind down or maybe just not quite so extreme reactions from Mira. The main issue I had with Flint is that he seemed overly clueless at times, mostly when Flint couldn't seem to understand Mira's emotions. I mean Flint seemed to have emotions himself so I had a hard time understanding why he couldn't understand that Mira had feelings and he needed to take those feelings in to account. While the story wasn't perfect I did like it and I'm sure I'll end up giving the next book in the series a try down the line. :D

I was borderline then Laurann Dohne pulled through

So there were times that scared me into think things were going to get ugly. Put things resolved themselves without going to dark nor being to unbelievable pleasant.

Sexy Cyborg and Sassy Human fall in love :)

Any additional comments?

Right from the very first page, the very talented author Laurann Dohner sets the stage for a seductive new series that features sexy and dangerous Cyborgs and the human women destined to be their mates. Ms. Dohner entices the reader in this tale with her ability to enhance each scene by using descriptive details that are highly erotic and often a whole lot imaginative and a little out of this world for the reader's full enjoyment. With an added twist here and there the danger, adventure and sinfully sensual delights in this story will keep the reader anxiously turning page after page in this entertaining story. The rich and strongly-defined characters are intriguing and appealing, although the battle of wills clash as well as the conflicts between Flint and Mira grows somewhat tiresome after awhile. The bond between them feels a little off, mostly due to Flint's abrasive, domineering and cold attitude towards Mira although by the end of the story Flint's whole demeanor has changed showing a tender and playful side that is sexy. Mira is a refreshing, feisty and intensely emotional heroine who is passionate and just a little sassy. The story is eccentric enough in its other world setting that the characters interaction can l enjoyed from a fantasy standpoint. Between Flint and Mira, the sexual tension is smoking and the sex is playful and sizzling hot.

SciFi Romance

Any additional comments?

Let me begin by yelling out "I LOVE LAURANN DOHNER!" Amazing writer with loads of talent and imagination. I will read anything she writes just because I know her writing skills won't disappoint.

This being said, this series has been hard for me to grow comfortable with. Not sure why. At first I thought it was the half-cyborg thing that bothered me -- sex with machines is kind of creepy. After I thought about it I realized that, no, this wasn't what bothered me. I LOVE the New Species series almost to the point of infatuation, after all and they are half animal. I think what bothered me was the lack of open respect for women (human women in the book) and the callus way the cyborgs demand ownership and dominance of the women they capture. The books are well written, steamy, and the end relationships are loving but I think the part of me raised to be a strong, independent, and free woman is agitated by some of the more callously dominant moves. I'm all for strong, dominant male characters, but I like them to be more suave than callus. This is a personal preference and does not at all take away from Dohner's magic.

If you like SciFi romance then I'd suggest giving it a whirl. It's different and you may find you love it!

Gotta love a Cyborg

I love reading the Cyborg Seduction series, big hulky, hunky men that dominate the women they love. My only dissapointment is that the series is too short. Edgar Rice Burroughs had it figured out correctly that when you have written a winner of a series don't stop, let people get their full.
