Jenna O'Conner is not human, nor is she considered the norm for the supernatural Other community that is benevolent enough to share this world with the humans. On her first day as a member of the Wilmington Police Department's SWAT Team, Jenna runs into trouble in the form of a deadly, mouthwatering man named Adam McPhee, who is also not human. He is determined to figure out exactly what Jenna is, which could very well put her life in danger. Furthermore, he is determined to have her all to himself.
As if that weren't enough for Jenna to deal with, a group of extremist Shifters who consider humans to be cattle and who think that factions of Others should stay within their own species - never to intermingle - come to town. Jenna has to find a way to shut them down, but in the process of trying to do that, she discovers things about herself that even she had never thought were possible. Contains mature themes.

I enjoy reading series and very rarely read stand alone series. I mostly read romance and sci-fi & fantasy.
This was a thrill to listen to it really was. The only down side to the book was the narrator. She made the male voices sound creepy and pretty much all the same. I know that when narrators have to read a character that isn't their own gender they do a pretty good job of it but Ms Skyye made the male characters sound unappealing and unattractive.
The author did a beautiful job of writing the story and it was a true joy to listen to. I could hardly stop. I am looking forward to the rest of the books in this series. I can't wait to see what new characters and plot twist Jessica Lane will throw our way. I will hope that Ms. Skyye will not be reading the remaining books after book 2.
I'm not going to go into details of what the book is about since the summary gave a decent book description. I've listened to this book and the second one in the series. I can't wait for the third book. The narrator did a good job for the most part. The male voices could be better at times, but they could also be a lot worse. There was a good balance of action, humor and romance. I would definitely recommend this book.
Audible Addict!!! My Favorite books have change since joining Audible and my taste for erotic has enhanced! Follow me to the dark side. ;)
The narration was only bad when she read the male voices. The male voices were horrible!!!!!!!!!!! The female voices were fine. I was not able to get through half of it without thinking about Capitian Kirk. I realy can't say anything good so "Until Next Time....
I'm not sure where this went off the tracks but it really did! The narration was slow I literally had to increase it because the pace was driving me nuts moving it up one notch only made it marginally better. Her male characters were the worst.
I'm not sure if it was the narration or the authors writing I think she was too snarky I felt like she was in "The characters head " a lot . It was almost overboard on the attitude .
Nothing I liked the characters if they just toned down the sarcasm or improved the dry wit a little I'm not sure.
I may try reading the next book to see if it's the author or the narrator that bugged me but only if I can get the book second hand
I enjoy historical, paranormal, and contemporary romance. Also steampunk, sci-fi, fantasy, suspense, and fiction. I'm open to about anything
Setting: Contemporary, North Carolina, USA
Shape shifters, demons, vampires & witches. This is the world Jessie Lane has created with this series. The plot is about our heroic team going up against extremist shifters who want strong divisions between species of supernaturals, and who think of humans as a source of food. The heroine, Jenna O'Conner, is a hybrid wolf shifter-demon who is a SWAT team member on the Wilmington police force. The hero is Adam McPhee, the wolf shifter alpha of the local pack. Secondary characters are Kent, a demon and fellow SWAT team member, and Owen Davies, US Pack Master. Maybe there are others, but I only got through chapter 7 of 18 before I turned it off due to the horrible narration. What's wrong with the narration? Chandra Skyye does a pretty good job with the narrative, and Jenna's voice is okay. The male voices - not so good. Then there's the pacing. She pauses noticeably where I think there are commas, but Owen's voice and pacing are downright irritating! There are pauses mid-phrase, and the delivery is extremely laconic with this character. I tried x1.25 speed, but it can't disguise those disconcerting hesitations in the character's utterances.
I was neutral on the story because it sounds interesting, but I didn't get far enough into it to tell if it would continue to be interesting.
If the plot sounds good to you, get it in ebook. It's available on Kindle for $3.99
I am a truck driver who listens to books instead of music. If I don't have a book its almost impossible to drive.
I really liked the story but forgot how badly I dislike the male voices the narrator did so it makes it really hard to listen to it again the story itself is so great that it's really starting to upset me that I can't really listen to it because of the narrator's voice doing really bad jobs with the males she does a wonderful job as far as females but her male voices just sound like some little kid pretending to be a man
Love to read!
It is hard to decide how good or bad the story is because the narration is so annoying. For all of the male voices, the narrator talks so slowly with unnatural pauses about every 4 words. It is so distracting that I couldn't focus on the story.
I didn't care much for the characters or story line overall but it might have been more tolerable with a different narration. I won't be getting book 2 or listening to another book narrated by Chandra Skyye.
It just didn't live up to my expectations. At first the book starts out cool, but then after first chapter or so it just becomes dull. You still want the main caricature to be a bad ass and just nothing she ends up being annoying. I was very disappointed with this buy.
I will probably not for fear or wasting my money again. I didn't get a chance to swap this title I don't know how.
May be the profomance was not the problem. It was the Story and the story line.
Disappointment, I was disappointed in the main character and the story line. I feel angery that I wasted a purches.
I really wish I could have gotten a different book.
The story is great
to read, not to listen to.
Every male character sounds as if they are suffering from dementia. She does the male characters so slowly that moments that should have been tense just seemed dull.
"What happened to a story"
Although others have commented negatively on Chandrasekhar Skyye's narrating it's generally ok but I do agree that her male voices are a bit strange.
The book overall was lacking in story line but full of mild sex scenes. Even in the middle of crisis they took time out for the main characters to have considerable time to have sex.
Practice male voices to make them more realistic.
Puke and skip bits!!!!!
Won't listen to any more by this author.
"Sadly let down by narrator"
Jenna is a young, feisty "other" with a secret that has kept her in hiding for her entire life, but this strong character wants to get out and live - which of course gets her into all sorts of trouble. This tale would be an easy and appealing read but is unfortunately let down by two things: 1) the narrator who tries to give different voices to the (mostly male) characters but slows the pace so much that it is difficult to keep track and continue listening; and 2) sometimes the story focuses for far too long on a scene or a line of thought from the character. Get on with it, already!
I think I will look for Jessie Lane's books in the Kindle library from now on.
I have only listened to three other audio books so far, so can't recommend an alternative narrator (Penelope Keith is fantastic but not really the right person for this genre!).
See first comment.
Couldn't finish this one - definitely Chandra Skye needs to review her method of portraying characters!
