Publisher's summary

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Sylvia Day comes the first novel in the Crossfire series - a provocative masterstroke of abandon and obsession that redefined the meaning of desire, and became a global phenomenon.

Gideon Cross came into my life like lightning in the darkness...

He was beautiful and brilliant, jagged and white-hot. I was drawn to him as I’d never been to anything or anyone in my life. I craved his touch like a drug, even knowing it would weaken me. I was flawed and damaged, and he opened those cracks in me so easily...

Gideon knew. He had demons of his own. And we would become the mirrors that reflected each other’s most private wounds...and desires.

The bonds of his love transformed me, even as I prayed that the torment of our pasts didn’t tear us apart...

Narrator great for female voices, NOT male

This review is hard for me because I've read this series multiple times and therefore already had an opinion about what character voices should vaguely sound like.
Here's where it's difficult - I feel that Jill's voice is perfect for Ava; however, she doesn't differentiate much between voices (whether male or female. Plus she just doesn't have a "male voice". This is an issue when you're listening to a book with a main H character who is supposed to be a strong, alpha-type male. It takes SO much from the feel of the story not only when you know its supposed to be him speaking, but especially when you don't realize who is supposed to be speaking until part way through the sentence. This book would be great if it were narrated in duet style - have a man with a masculine voice reading all of the speaking lines for the H. Mariana Zapata did this in "From Lukov with love" - even though the book is completely from a single h POV, she had Teddy Hamilton read all of the male main characters lines. Not every male voice, just his and it's the perfect compromise.
The reason the voice thing bothers me so much is that like I said, I've read this series several times and really enjoy the story and the characters. Both the h and H have nightmare inducing pasts from childhood and this series shows not only how they overcome those obstacles to be together but also how they are so instrumental to the other's healing. Ava and Gideon have instant raw sexual attraction and that never waivers, only becomes more meaningful as their relationship progresses.
This series might not be good for anyone who experienced sexual abuse as a child, as they both have flashbacks (or nightmares) of the abuse as well as talking about their experiences with the other. But if you like a dominant male without the higher level of physical and emotional dominance that 50 Shades has, then you'll enjoy this one.

Silly housewife porn

Silly is the first thing that comes to mind. And the last. In between some lapses of common sense and a plot that suffers from too much predicability. But, if you have nothing better to do while you are folding that laundry, enjoy.

Maybe this story requires two voice actors…?

Loved the story—gripping drama with heated erotic scenes. But I couldn’t get over the female voice actor’s portrayal of the male lead. The low husky tone she took when speaking for Gideon seemed more comical and mocking than masculine. It sounded like the sort of voice one would use when imitating a dumb jock. I will definitely revisit this story again, but next time I’ll opt for the book version. The audio didn’t do it for me.

OMG

Squealing with excitement! I bought this audiobook for almost 5years now but never brought myself to listen to it. After FSOG I searched for similar ones but they never matched up to that until this one. What can I say, don't hesitate just buy. First time I'm listening to this narrator. She did an excellent job. She's the reason I gave 5 star

Intriguing read.

I really enjoyed this story. The way the characters interacted with each other in real world situation was interesting and hit home for readers that may possibly have had some similar experiences. I enjoyed this book and would recommend.

My rating

This is one of my favorite series as Sylvia Day is one of my favorite Authors. However, I don’t like that her name is pronounced as Ava on audio but spelled as Eva, I really wish they would’ve pronounced it as it appears. I also think the person reading could’ve done a better job with voice differential between characters.

Shocking, to stay the least

Very jarring and a sexual. Felt befuddled, not to mention uncomfortable, over Eva’s casual conversations about self indulgence. Do not recommend for those under 18 and who are triggered by molesting.

Wow...intriguing, dark and delightful

This is fantastic love story. Usually one doesn't exactly get why the leads are attracted to each other but you get it in this story. Both flawed with past that are haunting. It goes places that shocked me and quite dark. Yes it's going to be compared to 50 shades but this is so much more complex and characters that are fully realized. The sex is hot and well laced throughout but not the driving force as the characters are so intriguing as is the story.

This needs to be in the movies or better yet on hbo or another premium channel. So much could be expanded on that a series would be amazing. You will not want it to end and race to read/hear the next book. Also the performance from Jill is top notch. She hits it out of the park.
