Publisher's summary

Olivia Kiskey needs a change. She’s been working at the same Nodaway Falls, New York, waffle house since she was a teenager; not a lot of upward mobility there. She’s been in love with Tobias, the cook, for the last four years; he's never made a move. Every Saturday night, she gathers with her three best friends—Peach, Millie, and Stacy—and drinks the same margaritas while listening to the same old stories. Intent on shaking things up, she puts her house on the market, buys a one-way ticket to Europe, and announces her plans to her friends... but then she meets Davina Granville, a strange and mystical Southern woman who shows Olivia that there is more to her life than she ever dreamed.

As Liv’s latent magical powers come to the surface, she discovers that having an interesting life is maybe not all it’s cracked up to be. The dark side of someone else’s magic is taking over good people in town, and changing them into vessels of malevolence. Unwilling to cede her home to darkness, she battles the demons of her familial past and her magical present, with those she loves at her side - and in the cross fire. Can the most important things in life—friendship, love, magic, and waffles—get her through the worst that the universe can throw at her?

The "heroine" causes 90% of the problems & deaths

The "heroine" causes 90% of the problems & deaths, in this book and I can't remember the last time i wished for a main character to die quickly, save lives and put us all out of our misery. She "never" appears to learn & she causes more pain and death to her friends because basically she appears to be too stupid to live. She even admits her stupidity several times during the book.

Amanda does a wonderful job with the narration but even she is hard put to save this book.

The plot has promise but Olivia Kiskey (the Heroine) is so clueless to reality she causes harm, damage and death all around her, supposedly in the guise of "doing the right thing", she is the kind of friend who makes it superfluous to have enemies

Cute and fun

This is my favorite narrator and a search for her brought me to this author. I thought it was a great pairing and will be on the lookout for other books by this author.

A Little Lame Magic

One of my worst pet peeves is when an author takes a character that otherwise is a fairly sensible person & makes them too stupid to live in order to create conflict. In addition the main character was so naive she thought she could “talk” one of the bad guys out of being bad & the whole story became ridiculous.

I’ve been a fan of the author’s podcasts on storytelling, but after reading 2 of her books, I have to say I’m not impressed.

annoying

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Eliminate the main character

What could Lucy March have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I'm not even sure.

Have you listened to any of Amanda Ronconi’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes and I loved them

Any additional comments?

One of my biggest pet peeves is a week main female charater. I seriously considered not finishing, it was that bad. The only thing that saved this book for me was the narration.

Great fun listen

If you like your paranormal light with a generous dose of humor- this is a great choice. Amanda Ronconi makes anything sound better. The story bogged down a bit- Liv is not the sharpest tool and I was a little frustrated with her mental progress but I still enjoyed the book.

Surprisingly Charming and Original

Would you listen to A Little Night Magic again? Why?

I accidentally found this title because of the narrator, Amanda Ronconi. I had enjoyed her narration of another book, and was curious to see what else she had worked on. This title was on sale, and I thought I'd give it a try. I was charmed by the story, and even went hunting for more titles by the author. No luck yet, but I'll get her sophomore effort!

What did you like best about this story?

The magic system is new and original, but it doesn't take away from the story. It builds slowly with the plot, until they're so inexorably entwined that you can't resist finding out where the author is going to go with them.

What about Amanda Ronconi’s performance did you like?

Amanda is funny and manages to convey so many different emotions in her voice that you just can't resist her. I always feel like I'm listening to a friend telling me a story.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, it has a bit of a slow start, but the characters are so engaging that it doesn't last for long!

Magicals Battle

The story was fine with good narrator. Not my usual genre but the story kept my interest with the suspense.

Nice listen, story a bit weak

The story was at times repetitious, and it got so complicated towards the end it almost collapsed under its own weight. But only almost. I will definitely listen to another word of this author’s stories.
