A Storm on the Horizon....

Every spring, the aristocratic magical families of Victorian England gather secretly at Merlin Hall to hobnob and hold the annual Fey Parliament. While the adults of Magic-kind—from wizards to wood elves, fauns to fairies, giants to djinnis, and their human counterparts—debate matters of importance, the gifted youths must undergo the dreaded Assessments, testing their supernatural abilities. And Jake's up next.

For rascally Jake Everton, the boy Earl of Griffon, the pressure's on! Hungry to qualify for the elite Lightrider program that guarantees a life of adventure, Jake must prove himself to the Elders as a worthy young hero-in-training. But when a mysterious junior witch arrives at Merlin Hall with secrets in her eyes and danger at her heels, Jake and his friends must unite to defeat the dark forces that have invaded the gathering and have sworn the frightfully talented girl's destruction. Join Jake and Dani, Archie, and Isabelle on an epic journey into a world of enchantment, making marvelous new friends...and terrible new enemies.

Great addition to the Gryphon chronicles!

Jake gathers new and old friends in this book to form an unstoppable team. I don’t want to let too much out for fear of ruining someone’s read, but this book follows Jake and his cousins to Merlin Hall a magical place where the old yew resides. I really enjoyed the story development giving us background in the magical affairs going on at the time and meeting many different magical people and creatures. This story is packed with adventures, trouble, mischief, friends and teamwork. Every character in the book grows with each installment of the Gryphon Chronicles and this one does not disappoint. Excellent read!

RISE OF ALLIES by E G Foley review

RISE OF ALLIES by E G Foley
Congratulations to another great children's/adult fantasy book in this series.
Comparisons are all too common when reading a story like this. My mind always goes to the Harry Potter series or The Hobbit and Lord of the rings series or The Chronicles of Narnia. Because of that I walk carefully in this review. With that said this book in the series reminds me a lot of one or more of the Harry Potter books. I happen to have spent the summer listening to audiobooks of that series again.
I am really enjoying this story: The RISE OF ALLIES audiobook. It allows me to hang unto every chapter and wanting to follow the story into the next chapter. There is adventure, jealousy, tension, mystery and magic in this fantasy story. Along with that, I love the charter's presented here. You feel as if you know them and look forward to seeing their stories play out in your minds eye.
I have now listened to books one through four in this series and look forward to the rest of the series on audiobook.
I highly recommend RISE OF ALLIES as well as this whole series if you enjoy the magical fantasy genre for kids and adults. I would say you will want to read and or listen to this story. I do not believe you'll be able to put it down. It's a world that you can easily visualize and become lost within.
And if you have kids I would suggest that you either purchase the book for the audiobook and sit down and listen to it together. I cannot imagine you would be disappointed.
I just finished it and Rise of Allies was so much fun and has great cliffhanger for the next book.

Jake makes new friends

Jake's adventures continue as he, his best friend, and his cousins travel to Merlin Hall for the great spring festival. This is not just a party for Jake, though--he must take his assessment to determine what magical training he will receive in the future.

While waiting to be summoned for his assessment, he watches as a young witch, Nixie Valentine, and a guardian-in-training, Maddox St. Trinian, face their challenges. His initial opinion of Nixie is that she is too haughty to be friends with anyone, and he can't even begin to think of being friends with the arrogant Maddox. Little does he know as he observes them that they will become part of his group of friends!

As the festival progresses, Jake and his friends run into numerous adventures, including the theft of Queen Victoria's royal standard, an attack on Archie by a half troll-half human boy, adventures in an Enchanted Gallery of paintings, and the persecution of Nixie by four malevolent beings. The group ends up working together to free Nixie from her tormentors and wind up becoming fast friends and allies.

This is an exciting, fun entry in the Gryphon Chronicles and I highly recommend it. New readers will likely enjoy it, but will probably have more appreciation for the overall story by reading the first three books before starting this one.
