Publisher's summary

In the tradition of Shattered and Game Change, Washington Post columnist Jennifer Rubin provides an insider’s look at how women across the political spectrum carried a revolution to the ballot box and defeated Donald Trump, based on interviews with key figures such as Kamala Harris, Amy Klobuchar, Stacey Abrams, Nancy Pelosi, and many more.

In a compelling narrative, bookended by Donald Trump’s 2016 victory and his 2020 defeat, Rubin delivers an absorbing analysis of the women’s counter-Trump revolution. Resistance tracks a set of dynamic women voters, activists, and politicians who rose up when Donald Trump took the White House and fundamentally changed the political landscape. From the first Women’s March the day after Trump’s inauguration, to the Blue Wave in the 2018 midterms, to the flood of female presidential candidates in 2020, to the inauguration of Kamala Harris, women from across the ideological spectrum entered the political arena and became energized in a way America had not witnessed in decades. They marched; they organized; they donated vast sums of cash; they ran for office; they made new alliances. And they defeated Donald Trump.

Democratic women candidates learned that they could win in large numbers, even in red districts. Black women voters in 2020 surged in Georgia and in suburbs in key swing states. Women across the country voted in greater numbers than in any previous election, flipped the Senate, and ensured victory for the first female vice president in the nation’s history. While Democrats recorded impressive victories, Republican women delivered critical victories of their own.

From the White House to Congress, from activists to protestors, from liberals to conservatives, Resistance delivers the first comprehensive portrait of women’s historic political surge provoked by the horror of President Trump. This is the indelible story of how American women transformed their own lives, vanquished Trump, secured unprecedented positions of power, and redefined US politics decades to come.

Resistance is essential listening for understanding the most important election in American history and the role women played in redesigning modern politics.

Excellent

Liz Cheney said it: “Men are running the world and it is really not going well.” If there were more women in power, I’m convinced there would be fewer wars and a lot less chest beating and aggrandizement in politics. I’m talking about well educated, pragmatic, intelligent, and caring women who wouldn’t put children in cages, insult or attack anyone who disagreed with them, support violence (let alone encourage it!), and wouldn’t treat women or minorities as second rate citizens. This book is well written and informative. I’ll be listening to it again.

Listen and enjoy

I listen to this book with a friend while we drove to Colorado for a vacation. We finished the book on the way back home . It's long but it's great. Made me feel a lot better about our current situation and the threats to our democracy. The narrator is great in the book Is full of new information. Really emphasizes the role women played in getting us a new president at a time that we really needed a change.

An excellent book

Certain periods of recent history fascinate me. For instance, I have read a great deal on the Kennedy years and the Watergate intricacies. Lately, I have tried to find well written and well researched books of American political history from 2015 through 2021. There are many excellent sources that give me greater insight, and there are some that are pretty mediocre.

"Resistance" by Jennifer Rubin is one of the excellent books that I am so glad that I read. I have admired Ms. Rubin's editorial perspectives for a long time, and have found her personal insights generally quite thoughtful when she appears on television, but "Resistance" is the first book written by her that I have read.

The book's narration was quite good, but the ultimate credit goes to the author for making the book so worthwhile. I found it full of carefully referenced and detailed data, but it was never, ever boring. Being a male does mean that I am frequently less aware of what half the population experiences in their personal, professional and political lives. Even though I think that I have generally tried to be cognizant of how others might feel, how they might perceive their world, "Resistance" taught me quite a bit about women's growing involvement in the politics of recent history. Although "Resistance" is a history, it is also a personal perspective from someone whose voice I respect.

I thought "Resistance" by Jennifer Rubin was a great book. I recommend it to both men and women. There is much to learn in "Resistance" and it is a great treatise on a very important topic.

Insightful and uplifting

I really enjoyed this book, after a slow start. I liked how the author, a Republican, pulled together the narratives of TFG, women, women candidates, and the upsurge of interest in politics by women in general. I can only hope that the future is brighter with a more balanced demographic in the House and Senate.

must read

Jennifer Rubin nails this empowering time of the women's movement and power that we as women have when it comes to misogyny, our human rights and ultimate success we have as a political force. And a big thank you to Black women for hitting the home run with their political force.
