What a relief it would be to be set free from all that plagues us - the inner struggle with anger, or contempt, the habitual sins. Is such an experience possible? John Eldredge believes it is, and in The Utter Relief of Holiness, he shows listeners how they can be that free, through the healing work of Christ in their lives. It begins when we discover what the salvation of Jesus Christ means for our own restoration and find that holiness is an expression of the healing of our humanity.
Here is an audiobook that explores the beauty of the genuine goodness available to us in Jesus Christ, and guides the listener through the process whereby God makes us whole and holy by his love. Listeners will be relieved. Utterly.

This is a really good book about dealing with sin and embracing holiness. The last two hours (or second half of the book) were more meaningful to me. The first part has more to do with why we should deal with sin in our lives and why we should seek after holiness. The second half deals with how to deal with sin and how to pursue holiness.
This book would not necessarily rank up there with the top ten spiritual books on my shelf, but it is valuable enough that I may refer to it again. I felt that the best points made by the author were about approaching sin and holiness with prayer, and I liked that the author provided specific examples of prayers for specific topics.
John Eldredge doesn't pull any punches, but he is decently encouraging about our ability to succeed. The juxtaposition of sin and holiness was necessary and well defined in his discussion of approaching God and living a life free from the anxiety that accompanies sin (otherwise known as leading a holy life).
The author's approach is to explain the reason for repentance, to peel away the layers of exuses that often accompany the habit of sin, to get the reader to recognize certain thought patterns (he calls them "agreements"), and to prayerfully banish them from the life of the reader, and finally, to teach the reader to approach every day with prayers that are designed to fend off temptation and thank God for the amount of holiness that is already possessed in the reader's life.
Overall, it was a good treatment of a difficult topic. The author is the narrator, and he has a good reading voice, although I thought his cadence was a bit repetitive. He is a slow reader, so I began by reading at 3x speed, but that was too fast to really take in the concepts he presented, so I slowed it down to 2x by the second half of the book, which may have been why I got more out of the second half.
If you are struggling with sin, what it is, how to deal with it, and how to pray about it to succeed in living a holy life, this book is a good resource.
Life changing !!!! Not much else needs said.
I have never felt closer to God than I have after Jesus sending me to the books of this author.
Began with high expectations since the first one " The Beautiful Outlaw " and once again Eldredge has over delivered :) Praise God!
I love you Jesus!!! :-)
How he explains the real ways that God , Jesus, and His Spirit works the process in us to bring us to wholeness and Holiness. What to pray to bring change that we all desire.
Thank you Mr. Eldridge !!
How it speaks directly to the heart of a Christian earnestly seeking to move forward along the pathway to wholeness and holiness. The author's ability to present his message so succinctly comes no dobut from his many years of speaking, counseling and writing. His message rings genuine through and through.
His reading of his own writing is excellent. His foundation in drama and many years of speaking allows him to put emphasis in just the right places. I have listened to other books by John read by other readers which are very good in themselves but John's own reading brings out suble layers of meaning beyond the words themselves. His voice really makes one feel as if he's talking to you as an old friend. It's a delight to listen to.
Though the topic was serious he was able to cause me to laugh at myself in way I haven't in a long time. The truth aroused deep joy in my heart.
This book will not disappoint a new listener to John's books nor one who has read nearly everything he has written such as myself.
It gave a very fresh meaning and view about holiness, Grace and Gods love. John Eldredge always made his books thought provoking and interesting and this is not an exception.
The topic of wholeness and holiness was explored with clear explanations and emotional word pictures. And then there was practical applications for my life. I feel excited about continuing my spiritual journey.
I laughed out loud when John E put "wicked" in front of various Bible passages that talk about the heart to illustrate God transforms my heart to "goodness'"
