Publisher's Summary

This wondrous tale of cosmic adventure immerses the listener in a world of heroes, gods, and demons. It tells the story of the Lord Rama, the 7th incarnation of Lord Vishnu. At about 50,000 lines the original Ramayana is one of the largest epic poems in history - as well as one of the world's most important literary and spiritual masterpieces. This translation by William Buck makes the ancient text accessible to the modern Western world, while preserving the richness of the original.

"Great narration of a timeless epic"

Ramdass brings alive this timeless story in way only he can do it. I not only recommend this book but also other audio books of Ramdass found on Audible.com and other places. Ramayana assumes new meaning from the mouth of someone so well educated , in full meaning of the word in both eastern and western contexts, as Ramdass.

    "Outstanding"

One of my most prized possessions is a hardcopy of the Ramayana retold by William Buck and forward done by Ram Dass. This is an incredible story that is often read and reread throughout one's life in the Far East. It has much to offer to those of all ages. It relates, among other things, the background and place in Hindu culture of some of its most important religious figures. But this is mostly the story of Prince Rama, his beautiful consort Sita, the monkey king Hanuman and their satanic archenemy Ravana.

The story introduces us to a world created almost 2000 years ago by the poet Valmiki. It is a saga about good and evil, nobility and betrayal, heroism and treachery. It's all here but told in a story unlike that ever told before or since.

Ram Dass is the perfect narrator. He is one familiar with the characters of the book unlike many others. He tells the story with passion and intrigue, compassion and delight that probably could not be equaled by many others.

This is a wonderful story beautifully narrated and my only reservation is that it is abridged. I never spend a credit on an abridged version of anything. But since this is all that is available, it is more than worth it. Hopefully, it will be enough to whet the appetites of new readers to acquire an unabridged version.

"A lot of fun for an important classic"

This was a fun reading to listen to. The story is so wonderful and the characters are so important in Hindu religous life. What makes this reading fun is the quirky voice of Ram Das, and also just hearing Ram Das conjures up images of a kind of flipped out, off the grid lifestyle that I couldn't entirely separate that from the text itself. I ended up liking that, so if you want that kind of Hindu/American psychadelic juxtaposition, its a good listen for you.

    "Yogic Wisdom in story form"

In this reading of the Ramayana, Ram Das does a superb job of voicing the characters, and giving life to such an epic story of the very heart of Yogic philosophy and wisdom.

    "Very poor pronunciation"

I had to turn this off within the first 15 min of reading it. Being Hindu by birth but not really knowing much about the Ramayana, I wanted to learn more about it. Thought I'd listen to this on my morning commute. But the lack of research into how some of the names/words are pronounced really upset me and I had to turn it off. Hoping a better version of this audiobook comes out.

"wish it was narrated a bit better"

It's a great book, and I'm enjoying listening to it while i drive. however, i wish it was narrated a bit better. It's an Indian book, there is no need to sugar coat it when you're pronouncing it, for example, it's Dashrath, not DashrathA, and Laxman vs pronouncing it Laxamana, Ravan, not Ravaana and so on. I understand the audience for this book may be non-Indian people but there is no need to say it that way.
I am not suggesting to have some one with a thick accent read it, rather have someone with clear pronunciation narrate the book.

    "Should have burned!"

How come when they were doing book burnings in Germany, CCCP, or wherever in history...this book was left out. It is in broken English that's impossible to understand. There are many other books you can read that tells better stories. My ears are still bleeding from trying to understand this this audio book. Great reader, sucky story.
