Publisher's summary

Puritan John Flavel (1630-1691) in Keeping the Heart (originally titled: A Saint Indeed or The Great Work of a Christian Opened and Pressed) has proven to be a steady and timely friend to many over the years. Using Proverbs 4:23 ("Keep your heart with all vigilance for from it flow the springs of life."), Flavel creates a treatise designed for all professing Christians. The aim is that the contents of the heart be laid bare, so that sin which is present is seen as sin and dealt with as a believer should and that the heart be guided to be pure in its devotion and affection for God. He does this, not with law, but by constantly pointing the believer to God's grace as the grounds and means for his sanctification. Flavel is not content to merely convey information, rather, with each point he carefully takes aim at your very soul and deftly fires shot after gospel-saturated, God-glorifying shot. Make sure you read this book slowly and prayerfully, allowing each purifying blow to have its full affect on your heart.

Life Changing - Buy it, you won't regret it!

The Puritans write with such a succinct style and John Flavel is no different. The only way I can describe it is that there is a paragraph of knowledge in every sentence. The teaching is clear, concise, and most of all VERY DEEP. Life changing.

I listened to it casually and it was so insightful. It is actually a treatise so if you treat it as such and follow along with the book you will find it has OH SO MUCH MORE to offer your walk with God!

Robertson Dean the Narrator has a rich full voice: very VERY professional. I wish I could thank him in person.

This particular book was published by Soli Deo Gloria Publications in 1998 and is an updated version from the free downloads. The language is tweaked from the original, understandable, but not so much that one cannot follow along.

Sadly it is out of print. There is not a Kindle book that matches. I searched Amazon and found a used hardcover of this updated version so that I may follow word per word. This 5 hour 55 minute book took me about 5 months to study; searching the inserted Scriptures and some of the quotes it mentioned. This was a journey I will never forget.

Great masterwork that requires numerous listenings. Amazing how thorough the author was in his inspection of this lofty topic.

Heart Surgeon Indeed

Flavel is a an anointed surgeon who wields Gods word with such precision, as a surgeon with a scalpel as he opens the heart, and uses the word so masterfully to remove the sin that threatens our life. This book should be read by all who want to be holy!

good

It is puritanical and a little dry but worth it in its content and what it achieves.

my depravity when compared to the Holy and Righteous GOD of all things.

When looking into a mirror and comparing myself to others I felt ok about myself. When looking into that same mirror and comparing my heart to that of Jesus I realized my complete depravity and need of Him. What a great book and so well written.

Deepest Content of Highest Importance

Personally, I like the reader's treatment overall, but the content is so grave that I feel it could use a bit more dynamic emphasis. However, that point is subjective and others might be distracted by a more dramatic reading. Let us apply this text to our lives lest we be found unwise though we know and believe it.
