Publisher's summary

A thrilling, pause-resisting debut about a twisted killer and a broken cop - both with nothing to lose.

Paul Czarcik, the longest-tenured detective in the Illinois Bureau of Judicial Enforcement, puts the rest of the team to shame. Ruthless and riddled with vices, Czarcik always gets his man. And fast. Until now...

A double slaying isn’t the open-and-shut case of urban crime he’s used to. Connecting it to a high-profile Texas judge, Czarcik realizes something bigger is going on. It’s the work of a serial killer for whom Chicago is just the beginning. Now he’s inviting Czarcik to play catch-me-if-you-can on a cross-country murder spree.

Going rogue, Czarcik accepts the challenge. But as the bodies pile up, he must come to grips with the fact that nothing - not the killer, the victims, or the rules - is what it seems in this bloody game of cat and mouse.

"Holgate’s energetic if ugly debut [contains] sharp observations of setting and character." (Publishers Weekly)

Back to the past

Refreshing, different, and a return to the forties and fifties feel. Loved the narrator, who really fit the offbeat strange lawman and noir nature of the story. Twist at the end made me laugh.

Excellent debut procedural with a twist!!!!

This is a very well written debut thriller procedural. This fast paced book has a pretty unique storyline. This held my attention and kept me engrossed and entertained. The characters were fleshed out and I felt invested in both the protagonist and the antagonist who had a compelling story of his own. The antagonist is more like an antihero. He’s a serial killer on a mission. The people he kills are not nice and are guilty of horrible crimes they never had to pay for. Some of these murders are pretty gruesome and I’m very happy it’s a work of fiction! The ending was a bit of a surprise and really made the story complete.
Patrick Lawler does a wonderful job narrating.

Excellent Story!

This was an excellent story from start to finish. I think it had just the right amount of detail without stretching the story out into 60+ chapters just for the heck of it. The narrator was excellent and had the perfect tone for this story.

I would recommend this to anyone who likes crime/police novels.

,

This book had a great story and good characters, but was a little to chatty for my taste.

pretty Good Book

Well I liked it a lot. If there was a sequel likely I’d read it. Highly recommended A+.

Good story; poor narration

This was a easy quarantine listen EXCEPT I kept getting lost in the vacillating voices. The characters were not voiced distinctly and each would often end up sounding like the other. It was difficult to keep track of which character I was listening to sometimes. This required more rewinds than I cared for.

A bit cliche, but a few bright spots.

This started rocky because the narrator did not capture the characters voices and nuance. The character voice and typical quirks we see on tv of the detective came off a bit corny. I liked the character and development of Daniel- this part was done very well and I looked forward to his appearances in this book. The story was a bit predictable and for that reason I give this an average score.

Fun cat and mouse thriller

Excellent character and plot development, likeable hero - and villan, you are almost unsure which one you want to come out on top, there are reasons to cheer for (somewhat guilty, regarding the criminal)there are solid reasons to wish both characters to win, which makes you review your ideas of true "justice". Mr. Holgate, I am anxiously awaiting your next offering, and I hope you use the same wonderful narrator for your next audiobook. Thank you for a rare captivating and truly enjoyable "fun ride" of a police procedural. PLEASE keep writing! I read thousands of books in this genre a year and I am confident tha your name will be among the most honored (and readily recognized) top-notch authors of this genre. Thank you - I lost my long-standing job due to COVID and it was a large part of my identity. I too am a professional writer/editor and you gave me hours of delight in what has been a bleak and discouraging time. Thank you;

It was okay, not my cup of tea

Myriad renditions of sexual abuse and violence isn’t appreciated by me even if the “bad guy” is destroyed in the end.
