Publisher's summary

Kenny: He was born into the struggle, a place where love was sometimes considered a luxury and most certainly couldn't be taken for granted. Being the sole provider of his household before he was old enough to get a job, it was no surprise that he maintained that position when super stardom landed at his door.

Tashena: She was born into the struggle, a place where abandonment was just one of the many things that could fall into your path. She learned early on that it was her responsibility to protect herself, and sometimes the ones she loved. In her eyes, pain was not a thing to be shared. It was better managed alone. And the weight of it, though crippling, was hers to carry and no one else's.

They were born into the struggle, separated by a few blocks of concrete and heavy doses of pain, somehow finding their way back to each other after life and its perils pushed them apart. The truth needed to be told before either of their hearts could mend. Healing was needed on both ends before reception was an option. Trust needed to be established before love was a possibility. Such heavy burdens to bare for souls that were already carrying too much.

Plus, a story of love...through the struggle.

Great story bad narration

This is a good storyline. Unfortunately, the female narrator ruined the audio version of this book. I will say give the book itself a try. Its a really good love story.

Captivating Style of Writing

This is a good story. It captured my attention from the very start. The style of writing was amazing! Vivid imagery and humor added so much depth to the plot. I’m not a big fan of either narrator and there were times when their voices distracted from the story. The ending just ends. What was that about?

I really enjoyed this! Not a fan of the performance

The female narrator grew on me but was flat and not much distinguishable differences from one character to the next BUT the writing was so good, it became irrelevant or she grew on me. Nixon voice is dark honey and enjoyed performance more while a little dry, it fit the character.
I enjoyed this story and and loved the main characters
This author sores at art of writing a love story with very flawed characters

And as a Houstonian, I love that the location is also a character and a backdrop

This book was okay!

I only listened because it was a spin off to the “Naughty & Nasty” she did; which WAS SOFA KING great!

But THIS... please Machelle Williams narration makes me was to kill myself slowly. Her cursing was terrible and she just NOT it. Idk how she gets these gigs.

Good listen

This was a good story. The family secret is unfortunately common amongst a lot of black families. I didn't like that the narrator made a 48 year old aunt sound like she was 78.

I LOVED The Story....But, That Female Narrator...

I actually put off listening to this book for soooo long because of the narrators....I'm such a fan of SBS's writing I decided to bite the bullet (In addition to some of my favorite narrators hadn't put anything out on audible in a while) and listen to the book anyway....I had to change the speed while the female narrator spoke....she's ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE....But, I found the story humorous, insightful and most of the family & friend relationships were beautiful....I absolutely adored the relationship Tasheena had with her neighbor's children...I wish the two of them would have been in the book a little more. Also, I loved how Kenny just wanted to take care of everyone he loved to try and make things better for them. His mother needed some psycho-therapy she was a mess....but, through it all it was wonderful to see that he didn't make excuses for her and he still loved her and he learned how to love her from a distance to force her to get herself together. If you'd ever read a SBS book, you know how steamy the sex scenes are....My only complaint was that darn female narrator....she should consider another genre, because romance is NOT her thing!

Skip this audible and read the book

Machelle Williams have to be the absolute worst narrator I have ever had the displeasure of enduring! I had to stop listening several times. If not for fact that I wanted to hear their story without waiting but not being able to read it at the moment, I would have just read the kindle version. It is so sad and unfortunate that Machelle was chosen for this, or any, audible readings. Even with Machelle’s horrendous voice, I am happy Kenny and Tashena got together after so many years. As with any romance book it had predicable moments but overall very sweet. I always love when the female lead is a true full figure woman too.

Tasheena and Plus, so good!

So glad they got their own story. Real love that lives and breathes through this this life that ain't easy, but is absolutely fair. I enjoyed this story from beginning to end and can only hope to learn how it all plays out for them all. Need a culmination/wedding/ever after novel to lay these amazing characters to bed. Thanks for another amazing story.
