Publisher's summary

From the USA Today best-selling author of The Remembrance Trilogy, The After Dark Series, and The FAMOUS Novels, comes a sexy, new stand-alone novel.

The Path He Chooses Could Mean Heaven or Hell...for Them Both.

Beautiful and defiant, Caleb Luxon was a bad boy angry with his father for abandoning his dying mother. He got into every type of trouble he could think of just to make his father miserable. To make matters worse, his dad remarried and the gold-digging new wife had a weird daughter whom Caleb wanted nothing to do with. When Caleb discovered Wren's closely guarded secret, everything changed. Fierce protectiveness filled him, and for the first time ever, Wren felt safe. He was her superhero, always swooping in to save her, and soon she developed a secret love for him. Caleb was drawn to Wren's frailness but the lines were clearly drawn. She was forbidden.

Jealousy and long pent-up desire finally overpower reason and the two spend one forbidden and unforgettable night in each other's arms. Panicked, Caleb leaves Wren heartbroken and their fragile relationship in shambles.

Years, and many regrets later, Caleb is summoned home after the sudden and untimely death of his estranged father which forces him to confront the many mistakes of his youth, and his regrets with Wren. In his father's last, hard lesson, Caleb is given a choice that will dictate not only his future, but Wren's as well. Will he finally acknowledge his real feelings for Wren, or let go of her forever?

Forbidden love, second chance romantic story

This is a very beautiful and emotional love story. The two people, who were meant to be together, had to overcome one too many obstacles to be together. In the end, love wins.

Meghan Kelly did a wonderful job narrating this story. She has given each character its own unique voice and personality. It was very entreating to listen to this book.

Captivating and Emotional Romance!

I really enjoyed this captivating and emotional step brother romance. Wren and Caleb were brought together when their parents married. But when Caleb saw how Wren's mother treated her, he became very protective of her. They formed a deep connection that grew more mature with age. But Caleb had his own challenges with his father and couldn't stay to always protect her. Before he left, they had a night of passion that would change both their hearts forever. They lived their lives separately, and never connected for years because of miscommunication. Now that tragedy has struck, they are back in each others lives. As they spend time together, their feelings that had been long buried, burst back to the surface. They can't stay away from each other and seek comfort and love from each other. But there are those that conspire to keep them apart. Will they finally trust each other enough to fight for their love and future together? I really liked and cared for Wren and Caleb even when they frustrated me at times. Their push/pull relationship and their fiery chemistry was palpable.
Meghan Kelly does a terrific job capturing each characters personality. Her voice changes were distinct and her intonations make you feel all the turmoil, excitement, and passion that Wren and Caleb felt. Kelly kept me completely engaged, wondering how this story would all play out, and I was completely lost to her storytelling!

Ooh Caleb!

If you are looking for an emotional and romantic step brother romance, look no further. Kahlen Aymes brings this to us with her book One Step Closer. Wren and Caleb are brought together when their parents marry. After seeing how horribly treated Wren is,Caleb becomes extremely protective of her, and their feelings begin to change. But his father has other plans for him, and Wren is not part of it. They are separated by college and dreams, but are brought together several years later after the death of Caleb’s father. Now we get to see just how strong their feelings are. While their chemistry is there the story is a bit of a slow burn while they begin to fix their way back to each other. And while I love their journey, the secondary characters play an important role letting us have that one character we just love to hate. Wren’s mother and Caleb’s current girlfriend show their true colors. We also have the warmth of a grandparent found in the kitchen, keeping the couple on track and giving them the love they need. This is a wonderful listen with just the right amount of angst, greed, deception and a love that is meant to be.

Meghan Kelly is our storyteller and she brings this book to life. I am a huge fan of her talent, and she is the perfect fit for this story. She finds the essence of these characters, from the past to the present and lets them mature and grow. Her voice let’s us hear the emotions and keeps the story flowing at a good pace. It’s a listen you want to queue up and enjoy.

A Love Meant to Be!

I just love a good second chance romance and this one, about Caleb and his 'Little Wren', was great! I think it is possibly one of the best yet!
Their story had me laughing and crying and going though a whole rainbow of emotions in-between and back again.
That is how powerful this author is with her story-telling.
And then we have the audio which was made all the more pleasurable by Meghan Kelly and her remarkable voices.
Together they have crafted a fabulously entertaining package, one that I am most definitely recommending!
I listened to a review copy of the audiobook and my voluntary review is recorded above.

Good listen

It has a good plot, good characters, well written, the author pulled me in giving me a interesting listen. I enjoyed this, who doesn't like second changes. This was a lovely romance with a few twists and turns to make it interesting.

The narrator did a wonderful job really making you feel the emotion of each character as they go through some very hot times. The character voices are wonderful, you always know who is talking and what they are feeling. Her male and female voices are given with strength and character. I really liked how she showed emotions why they were bating back and forward. There are no repeating of words, no background noise, no volume changes. If breaks were taken I could not tell. This is one narrator I know I will enjoy listening to each time I pick up one of her new audios. I really look forward to listening to her voice.

Step Brother

My preference is a story in first person, but even though this was third person I was enamored with the story! These two main characters seemed perfect for each other and I was glued to this. I enjoyed this new-to-me narrator. I felt the emotions and smiled at the HEA.

Take this one step

This is my first Kahlen Aymes story but not my first Meghan Kelly . I listen to this only because I saw Meghan Kelly did the performance. It’s a story I usually won’t listen to. A story about step brother and step sister. .

Heroine is Wren. Hero is Caleb.

Caleb has one purpose in life to protect, to protect Wren , come high water . Does he , grab it and see how it plans out

Meghan Kelly performance was spot on , she did all the characters fantastic, you were able to tell who each character was

Loved it!

I thought the book was great. It had a few twists and I thought it would go in a different direction, but I’m glad it ended the way it did. I was rooting for Ren from the very first chapter when Caleb left her after their intimate night. The way their love story played out was very beautiful.
The narrator did an amazing job! I loved how she was able to differentiate each character & give them their own voice.
