I'm not Goth to hide my Drow heritage, I'm Goth because I'm not a quitter.

My name is Cheyenne Summerlin, remember that name. Somebody should...

The world can't know I'm a Drow halfling. Not yet. I barely have these powers under my control, but time's up. I'm about to take magic for a test drive. Want to come along?

The black ops government group believe they can run my life... But I have plans of my own.

Watch out magical evil doers - I'm about to crash your party.

But will my training be enough?

Excellent Start to this Series

I like the MC Cheyenne, she is a focused, intense, person. She is also a genius with computer programming and the Dark Net. I really dislike Sir! he is a hateful man, but a man of his word when it comes to it. He is not above manipulating circumstances to his convenience. Narrator does a Great job with the various characters voices and the entire storyline.

Drows forever!

First I want to address some of the other reviewer's issue with the MC's attitude. I didn't really feel the same. I kept "she's only 21" in mind when she seemed a bit petulant or bratty. And, this didn't really happen that often.
Second I didn't care for the breakdown of the books. Mainly the fact that there weren't any. LOL This is really set up as a long book with occasional retelling of backstories or ideas to keep you updated.
Third the ending seemed a bit cliffhanger-ish. I know, not a word but I bet you all know what I mean regardless.
This is a good book. I didn't get bored or annoyed with it which is a win for me. I'm not one to dig into plots. I just want to like what I hear/read. That's it. With this I did and with amount of reading you get, the neat way Magicals are described and their new lives here, and a good narrator... it's well worth the credit.

starts slow picks up new story line good character

this is for all 6 books in the series. characterization of an angry goth early adult woman was engaging. I have no knowledge to compare with. interesting combination of magic and technology. I enjoyed all 6 books. narrator was excellent due to the manner in which book was written so could tell different people speaking. glad I read this serirs.

Interesting!

Once Upon a Midnight Drow
(Goth Drow #1)
by Martha Carr and Michael Anderle
There is a lot to unpack in this novel. Supernatural being normally live below a certain borderline. There is a security force that controls and hunts down those that break the rules. Most humans are clueless that they live among creatures that are powerful and just as smart as they are but look a lot different. There are orcs, trolls, goblins, elves, and more. Some have magic and some don't. No one has seen a half long until the gal of the story comes along. She is half Drow ( dark elf) and half human. The story how that happened is interesting. She doesn't know any drows to help her learn how to control her magic.
It's full of interesting characters and tons of fighting, both magical and other. Enjoyable read but I thought it could have been either enhanced and made into two books or revised to make a shorter book.
Good narration!

Very original story

Characters are different and the mystery of the storyline keeps growing. Kind of a Alien Nation theme, but still good.

Takes cringe way beyond 11

So I gave this a good 4 or 5 hours of effort. It starts intriguing enough with a Drow breaking out of high security prison and setting up some exposition for the future Heroine.

Once Cheyane gets introduced, it's all down hill. It's cringey at every step.

1) Cheyane refuses to admit to her one and only friend that there's another side of herself when her friend is asking for help

2) Cheyane miraculously taps into her other side and starts kicking butt and casting magic without any effort at all

3) Cheyane's emo "I'm so freaking amazing hacker/programmer" classes are just really bag. She's an ass. And little miss "there's no way they'd ever track my online persona to me" when her handle is literally cheyane71. No hacker in the right mind would have ever created a handle so close to their identity. Then there's this idea that she has so many hacking apps and just runs them all at the same time to brute force into a file. It doesn't work like that. Bruce forcing takes lot of processing power. Running 5 of them concurrently just ruins how productive each of them are by making them fight for resources. This is just basic computer science stuff.

4) Cheyane's trainer doesn't really do much, but that's fine because she masters most of her powers over night. Literally.

At this point, I just couldn't continue. It's obvious she's going to be emo amazing the entire book with sass and attitude and that just doesn't make an appealing character for me at all. Hopefully she has some growth, but I just can't continue with the book.

The narrator did good with what she had to work with, which wasn't much.
