An astonishing work of cutting-edge science and cultural history that radically reframes how we understand the vagina - and consequently, how we understand women - from one of our most respected cultural critics and thinkers, Naomi Wolf, author of the modern classic The Beauty Myth.
When an unexpected medical crisis sends Naomi Wolf on a deeply personal journey to tease out the intersections between sexuality and creativity, she discovers, much to her own astonishment, an increasing body of scientific evidence that suggests that the vagina is not merely flesh, but an intrinsic component of the female brain - and thus has a fundamental connection to female consciousness itself.
Utterly enthralling and totally fascinating, Vagina: A New Biography draws on this set of insights about "the mind-vagina connection" to reveal new information about what women really need, and considers what a sexual relationship - and a relationship to the self - transformed by these insights could look like.
Exhilarating and groundbreaking, Vagina: A New Biography combines rigorous science, explained for lay listeners, with cultural history and deeply personal considerations of the role of female desire in female identity, creativity, and confidence, from interviewees of all walks of life. Heralded by Publishers Weekly as one of the best science books of the year, it is a provocative and deeply engaging book that elucidates the ties between a woman's experience of her vagina and her sense of self; her impulses, dreams, and courage; and her role in love and in society in completely new and revelatory ways sure to provoke impassioned conversation.
A brilliant and nuanced synthesis of physiology, history, and cultural criticism, Vagina: A New Biography explores the physical, political, and spiritual implications of this startling series of new scientific breakthroughs for women and for society as a whole, from a writer whose conviction and keen intelligence have propelled her works to the tops of bestseller lists, and firmly into the realms of modern classics.

A nice mix of the authors personal experience, with science and advice, should be required reading for all females and males!
Lawyer, reader, writer, performer. Just love listening to books and talking about it!
I read this after having the fortune of acting in the local production of Vagina Monologues. It is a completely different work and very informative, fast read. If you think you already know it all, think again. Read and learn my friends. Thank you Wolf!
loved it but a bit redundant at times. that's ok. I want to listen again, pause and take notes so I can quote the information accurately.
Maybe, It was informative as a woman but I didn't find it so compelling to recommend it.
YES! I thought this narrator was a bad choice
I will definitely listen and read Vagina again. It is packed with information, advice and knowledge that I would like to internalize and act upon. Some sections made me feel ashamed and was tough to listen to. Other section gave me hope and guidance in how to treat women.
The vagina and all women are my favorite characters. Everything women had to go through under patriarchy raised all women in my estimation. I know some of the things Wolf said are biased and over emphasized but the truth shines through. The vagina is the center of the Universe, the goddess within and if all threat her with the respect she deserves, all wars and bickering will stop. Jealousy will cease to raise its ugly head and domestic violence will be a thing of the past.
Therese Plummer's reading of the text made it real for me. Her nuances in the narration was excellent and she brought everything to life.
I am grateful to have listened to this book. It was life changing and I want to urge everyone to listen or read this important book. But be careful, you're in danger to have a paradigm shift if your mind is open enough.
Naomi Wolf, thank you your research and writing this book.
I am the 30 something truck driver. Listen to audiobooks often and enjoy listening to them at work.
I was at first embarrassed to listen to this book, but was quickly reassured with facts I had never known. I found myself seperating the facts from some extreme feminist opinions sprinkled here and there but maybe thats just me. Over all a truthful, beautiful, and real history of the vagina.
I would have kept it more historical and scientific as it is in the beginning, and omitted the author's extreme feminist views and opinions.
She brings to this book a health issue I was unaware of and a breakdown of nerves in the vagina and how they attach to the spine and several other facts and scientific findings I found very amazing.
I listened to it the entire way through.
This book is a must read for males and females. It is the key to the mysteries of life and in my opinion happiness. We surely need to open our minds to evidence already gathered from both scientists and people that have real life experience.
"EVERYONE SHOULD LISTEN TO THIS!"
