Publisher's summary

Nobody's Victim is an unflinching look at a hidden world most people don’t know exists - one of stalking, blackmail, and sexual violence, online and off - and the incredible story of how one lawyer, determined to fight back, turned her own hell into a revolution.

“We are all a moment away from having our life overtaken by somebody hell-bent on our destruction.” That grim reality - gleaned from personal experience and 20 years of trauma work - is a fundamental principle of Carrie Goldberg’s cutting-edge victims’ rights law firm.

Riveting and an essential timely conversation-starter, Nobody's Victim invites listeners to join Carrie on the front lines of the war against sexual violence and privacy violations as she fights for revenge porn and sextortion laws, uncovers major Title IX violations, and sues the hell out of tech companies, schools, and powerful sexual predators. Her battleground is the courtroom; her crusade is to transform clients from victims into warriors.

In gripping detail, Carrie shares the diabolical ways her clients are attacked and how she, through her unique combination of advocacy, badass relentlessness, risk-taking, and client-empowerment, pursues justice for them all. There are stories about a woman whose ex-boyfriend made fake bomb threats in her name and caused a national panic; a 15-year-old girl who was sexually assaulted on school grounds and then suspended when she reported the attack; and a man whose ex-boyfriend used a dating app to send more than 1,200 men to ex's home and work for sex. With breathtaking honesty, Carrie also shares her own shattering story about why she began her work and the uphill battle of building a business.

While her clients are a diverse group - from every gender, sexual orientation, age, class, race, religion, occupation, and background - the offenders are not. They are highly predictable. In this book, Carrie offers a taxonomy of the four types of offenders she encounters most often at her firm: assholes, psychos, pervs, and trolls. “If we recognize the patterns of these perpetrators,” she explains, “we know how to fight back”.

Deeply personal yet achingly universal, Nobody's Victim is a bold and much-needed analysis of victim protection in the era of the Internet. This book is an urgent warning of a coming crisis, a predictor of imminent danger, and a weapon to take back control and protect ourselves - both online and off.

Critic reviews

"[A] memoir doubling as a rallying cry for privacy justice. . . . Goldberg chronicles in Nobody’s Victim her battle for justice in a tone that is both take-no-prisoners and warmly gregarious . . . The cases she narrates are gut-wrenching, and her conversational approach lightens what could otherwise be an unbearably heavy load. It also makes accessible the complicated legal history leading to our current moment." (New York Times Book Review)

“In the age of doxxing, revenge porn, and misogynist trolls, this book from Goldberg, a victims’ rights lawyer litigating against online harassment, is required reading. . . . In telling these wrenching stories, Goldberg gives voice to the legions who have experienced unthinkable violence.” (Esquire, Best Nonfiction Books of 2019)

“Feminists who grew up alongside the internet - who don’t see a distinction between real life and what happens online - will find Nobody’s Victim instructive; those who identify as survivors will find it essential.” (Elle)

You need this for you sanity!!!

This book was life changing. During my very contentious divorce, our kids were continuously poisoned by my ex. As if divorce isn’t hard enough, the cult I once belonged to teaches its members to shun/ostracize those who leave the organization. This book helped with both issues. It helped me become a better parent and helped me bring his toxic behavior counter parenting to light with the court. I am so very, very, very appreciative.

She’s an inspiration.

Her words have helped keep me motivated as I became the first in my family to get a college degree, and now I’m attending my first year of law school. Someday I will join the fight against the psychos that make us feel powerless.

Nearly Every Woman Has A Story

Awful stories about trolls, stalkers, and pervs who attempt to ruin innocent lives for kicks and how the laws and online companies fail to help the victims. Instead, seeking profits over protection, using first amendment rights or loopholes in weak legislation to skirt responsibility. Sadly, cops and school administrators doing the same, blaming girls for being victims and violating/ignoring Title IX rules. In addition, tales of children/women (anyone disenfranchised of power or control) falling prey to abusers who use intimidation and coercion to get what they want.

This is not a light read. Be prepared to hear countless stories about some of the worst of the worst and how the law and men in power attempted to circumvent punishing those who committed these horrible, yet not surprising, atrocities.

Pragmatic

I liked the pragmatic advice and the hope the book offers. It’s so easy to feel defeated by this trend, that it’s helpful to know there are those who do this work and guide others through healing and empowerment.

Should be required reading for anyone who uses the internet. So basically everyone.

Ms. Goldberg narrates her own book fantastically. The subject matter is compelling, jaw-dropping, and absolutely necessary information to have. Whether you are currently dealing with any of her entitled people, or just want to protect yourself or your loved ones from the same, this is worth the time to listen. I finished this book with a new fire and determination to fight and to do all I can to help others facing situations like those in her book.

ALL-NIGHTER!

I purchased this book at midnight and just finished it. I never considered how many people became victims of slut shaming, trolls or otherwise through no fault of their own. I always thought of myself as a free thinker and this book forced me to take a serious second look at some of my opinions. The author did an incredible job bringing all cause and effect of internet usage as far as sex is concerned and I have an entirely new outlook on this as well as new found empathy for the victims. This book is important and should be curriculum for High School students. It would save lives.
