Publisher's summary

#1 New York Times best-selling author Nora Roberts presents a passionate story from the thrilling Night Tales series.…

Her voice was like whiskey, smooth and potent, but it was her contradictions that fascinated Detective Boyd Fletcher - the vulnerability beneath her tough-as-nails facade. Late-night radio announcer Cilla O'Roarke was being threatened by a caller, and it was Boyd's job to protect her no matter what. But the sultry deejay was getting under his skin, and the undeniable attraction that sizzled between them concerned the detective…because anything could happen on the Night Shift.

I love it.

From start to finish, I love it. I was lost in the story, like I was there caught up in the sound of her voice. Beautifully read and spoken like she was meant to read this book. Well done Kate Rudd well done!

"OK STORY LINE, HORRIBLE NARRATOR"

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Absolutely, main character is a winer and hostile about everything.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Give the main character some common sense.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

She was terrible! She made the main character sound like a cry baby.

Could you see Night Shift being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

No way!

Entertaining

I’m new to audiobooks and Nora Roberts and decided to give both a try after seeing them as kindle daily deals. I listened to this on and off during my 30 minute commute to work and l have to say the audiobook is the only reason I didn’t quit part way through. The narrator wasn’t nearly as bad as many have said (IMO) and her use of different voices helped distinguish the characters and give some life to the story. The ebook alone had me rolling my eyes.

The story was predictable and the insta-love that Boyd had was a little too much for an adult novel and I can see why people had a problem with his character especially when it was such a stark contrast to Silla. It’s definitely more of a romance than a thriller so go into that knowing so and maybe it’ll be a better read/listen.

Overall it was enough to keep me interested and looking forward to continue but in the end it’s not anything that will leave a permanent imprint in my memory. Definitely would still recommend people to try it as it’s a shorter listen/read.

Night Shift

Any additional comments?

The audiobook version of Night Shift is just over seven hours of listening, narrated by Kate Rudd.

Character development is problematic with this story. Both main characters come across as over-the-top and sweaty romance-novel corny. The type-A cop is strong, gritty, handsome, hunky, patronizing. The female lead is vulnerable, swooney, with transparent infusions of inner strength mixed with girly-virginal dependence. Sound familiar? "You Tarzan, me stupid” is actually phrase in the book … meh. It would be funnier if the characters weren’t so stereotypical.

That said, also very typical of Nora Roberts, the fundamentals are there for an interesting procedural. There is a bad-guy out there, stalking and terrifying. He’s calling a late night radio personality and threatening her life. Enter Tarzan-hero cop.

About 70% of the story is devoted to the come-hither-get-away romance, 30% to the stalker mystery. Kate Rudd narration is okay, nothing special, but listenable.

For the most part, Night Shift is a weak effort, in my opinion. Nora Roberts has created better stuff. But, that’s just me….you may love it!

Narrator isn't as bad as the other reviews say

I enjoyed this book. It kept my interest and was a fun read. I'm not sure why there are so many bad reviews about the narrator. She wasn't bad or annoying. Sometimes, the main character did come across as a little whiney but it didn't affect what was going on in the story for me. I think that the fact that this book is one of Nora's older ones and still held up, is a huge accomplishment for a writer. Overall, this book was entertaining and well written. If you like Nora Robert's writing, definitely read this one. :)

Old Classic Roberts

What did you love best about Night Shift?

Ms Roberts' wrote this wonderful series in the 90's, and they are classic core romance. No FSOG type of romance, but a simple feel good story with well edited dialogue Ms Roberts' older series had.

What did you like best about this story?

This story had up beat DJ dialogue that makes you miss a good record spinner. The oldies had rhythm that made you want to dance and rock n roll.

Did Kate Rudd do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

K.R. AKA's Rachel Vivette, Stella Bloom if you are a fan.
Unfortunately, I am not!! I have been fooled into buying all three of these AKA's, hoping Ms Rudd would get better. Ms Rudd has ok voices, but her female narration voice and cadence is just unbearable. Her flow is so stilted and contrived, and this is the best of her reads I own as Author had good dialogue. She reads Myeral Sawyer's Tempting Fate, my all time fave from that author, but I couldn't listen to her sing song cadence. I tried this read as I love this series, and this story has the most upbeat dialogue of the series, but I can't listen to the balance of this series. I will have to re read hard copies.I can only hope reader gets better e.g. reader Angela Dawe who has indeed gotten great.

Any additional comments?

note: I do use the new 1.25x speed which greatly improves a listen

Not one of her best

Loved the story line but the narrator was awful. If she had just used her regular voice it would have been so much better. She actually sounded better as a man.
