Publisher's summary

Sometimes your past catches up with you. But John Milton has decided to catch up with his past.

Eighteen years ago, on a mission in Iraq, Captain John Milton made a reckless decision with serious consequences. But it was Major Connor Gordon who really paid the price.

Now Milton is on a different mission: to atone for his past sins by helping those in need. A human rights activist has vanished without a trace, and his dying mother is desperate to know the truth. When the mysterious disappearance leads Milton all the way to the Western Isles of Scotland, he sees an opportunity to find his old friend Connor and finally make amends. Milton is determined to track both men down, wherever his search may lead.

From Okinawa to the Outer Hebrides, Milton is about to take a journey into a cutthroat world of bribery and corruption, where his strength and resolve will be tested to its limits. He may no longer be the man he was in Iraq. But can he keep his cool when it really counts?

Starts great, ends badly.

I just finished the book and, as much as like the John Milton series, was frustrated and disappointed. With this book the author basically hijacked his own story. He started a new book instead of finishing this one. It left me (the reader) unsatisfied. Yes, I will purchase the next book and I must say I have great respect for Mark Dawson as an author...but I really don't like what he did here. The romantic aspect of the story? Basically no conclusion to it. The hero exposing and dealing with those who have murdered people in the process of their nefarious scheme? Not really. The hero facing down the evil strong man as the course of the book would lead us to expect? Don't mean to offer a spoiler but you might as well know ahead of time the answer is "It doesn't happen." Again I say, I like Milton and I like Dawson. I will get the next book in the series...but I am expressing my frustration here in hope that writers might pay attention to the importance of making sure the conclusion of a book meets with expectations created by earlier chapters of the book. For the first 8 hours this is a great story. In the final hour the reader goes "What? Why is it finishing this way?) We know why...so the next book can start, but the author has let us down.

Milton in top form.

An excellent storyline as always, and a bonus, much of the story takes place in near my wife's birthplace. It is always nice when you have a connection to or have been to a location in a story and this is the second book by Mark that I can relate to. Great stuff. The book ends with a perfect lead into the next Milton book.

Jason Bourne reincarnated!

It just occurred to me that listening to all of these books that John Milton is Jason Bourne in reincarnated. I fear Milton has done just about all he can do in this life of his.

A lot of moving geographical parts....

Get your atlas out...this story takes you all over the outer islands of Scotland. I was forever looking up locations. It was still a good John Milton story. Narration was spot on as usual. Looking forward to the next book.
