Publisher's summary

While nursing some drinks after a terrible day at work, Tucker Candle spits out his rum and coke when a stranger across the bar turns water into wine. But did he? Or was it just an alcohol-induced trick of the light?

This stranger has a warning for Candle: skip your planned business trip tomorrow. If you go, I won't be able to protect you any longer.

With a clear head the next morning, Candle resumes his normal life, working for a company that's about to lay him off. That barroom huckster couldn't have been magical, or prophetic. He was just some washed-up weirdo with a few tricks.

But when Candle comes back from his trip to find his pregnant wife missing and a dead man's blood seeping into his bathroom floor, the washed-up weirdo's counsel doesn't seem so foreign now.

Cops, friends, family... Candle doesn't trust anyone. As he searches for his wife, people around him keep turning up murdered. If he can't find her and uncover the mystery driving the chaos, the stranger's words might come true, after all.

Great Story!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, it is not a deep read, but it is fast paced and entertaining.

What did you like best about this story?

The fact that the main characters are every day people and not ex-special forces. They are in situations that are a little far fetched, but realistic enough to be believable and entertaining.

Have you listened to any of William Coon’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No. Good narration after a little getting used to his character distinctions. Not smooth at first but definitely not a problem.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Nope, just good solid entertainment

Any additional comments?

One thing I could have done without is the main character weeping each time he realized he forgot to feed his cat...

Interesting Story

The story grabs your attention immediately and follows up with lots of action and mystery. While the immediate situation is resolved, there are many questions left unanswered. The included first chapter of the next book implies there is more to come…and I am curious enough to give it a read.

Whistleblow me!

I loved Stories to Read While Driving: Kill the King and Other Tales by Jim Heskett. I loved this to. And what a book it is. This book has all. It is a mystery, a thriller, and a emotional rollercoaster. I could not recommend this book more. I liked everything about the characters of this story, even there names! Is there something negative about this? i would say no, i am really not sure i can say something negative.

William Coon is also back from Stories to Read While Driving: Kill the King and Other Tales and Changing Michael! He is fantastic in those books, and he is fantastic here! Voice work is perfect, and also pacing. 4 hrs and 48 mins in audio heaven! with William Coon and Jim Heskett!

Excellent!

This can be summed up in one word, and that's excellent!! I pretty much loved everything about it, though thought it could of been longer. That's simply because I didn't want it to end.

Candle is the MC and was such an easy character to like. He was easy to relate to and had a way of making it impossible not to root for him. I loved how cynical he was when he first meets Kareem because I think all of us would be. It made him more believable.

The plot was fast paced and well thought out. It grabbed me from the start and didn't let go. It's a short enough listen but it's not short on anything else. The attention to detail and the author's style of writing made this amazing and totally captivated me. It's packed with suspense, action, intrigue and was at times emotionally intense. Poor Candle!!!!

In all this is a must read and a series that has the potential to be amazing. I need book 2!!!

William Coon was fantastic. His pacing and tones were perfect. He told the story flawlessly and is definitely a narrator I need to check out.

Good Beginning to a New Series

What did you love best about Wounded Animals?

It was fast paced and had a lot of suspense.

Which scene was your favorite?

I loved both scenes with Candle and Kareem.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There were moments in the book where I was close to screaming out loud to Candle, "for Pete's sake call your aunt!"

Any additional comments?

Wounded Animals by Jim Heskett is an entertaining and fast paced novel. I enjoyed the story very much, although I figured out who was behind the mystery elements pretty early on in the story. The car chase nature of the narrative kept me interested, I was holding my breath waiting for the next awful thing to happen to poor Candle. There was also one very intriguing character who I can’t wait to learn more about in the next book. William Coon is a wonderful narrator for this audiobook. He does some very nice voices and made me feel like I was right there with Candle the entire time. Overall this is a promising beginning to a new series.

I Really enjoyed this book!

The beginning of this book made a promise and the end delivered in ways I didn't see coming. I am looking forward to reading, or most likely listening, to the next book in the series.

The main character was smart and capable. More than that found myself not only routing for him, but sharing in his pain as well. Without a great character I wouldn't be able to tell you that I enjoyed this book. Don't take my word for it, give it a listen.

Gripping from start to finish

Action packed, fast paced suspense delivered with dry humor and an easy to read style of writing!
Wounded Animals is the first book in the Whistleblower trilogy written by Jim Heskett.
The protagonist, Tucker Candle, is having one hell of a week. He is about to lose his job, his six-months-pregnant wife is missing, and there are dead bodies turning up wherever he goes. Candle is an extremely likable character, and it was great fun to follow him on his chase to uncover this mystery.
Narration by William Coon was spot on. The first person perspective allowed him to bring Tucker Candle to life perfectly. His voice and delivery seemed just right for how you would imagine Tucker to be. Loved the cynicism!
Looking forward to book 2.
