Publisher's summary

In a mountain cabin, a detective opens a Pandora's box of horror that will haunt him to his dying day. Within hours, Vincent Cardoni - a brilliant surgeon with a history of violence and drug abuse - is arrested for the heinous crime. Facing a seemingly insurmountable wall of evidence, he turns to top criminal defense attorney Frank Jaffe and his daughter Amanda. Her first taste of criminal defense work raises moral questions Amanda is loathe to address. Is she defending an innocent man or using her considerable skills to set a monster free? Then, Cardoni mysteriously disappears. Four years later, a second set of killings begins...Has Cardoni resurfaced? Is this the work of a copy-cat killer? Or has the real killer been someone else all along? Following a twisting trail of clues, including a harrowing diary that clinically records the killer's deeds, Amanda and detective Bobby Vasquez become targets of the first genuinely monstrous psychopath of the new century.

Critic reviews

"Skillful plotting, good writing, an excellent cast of characters." (Nelson DeMille )
"It takes a really crafty storyteller to put people on the edge of their seats and keep them there. Phillip Margolin does just that." (Chicago Tribune)

Loved It

This is the second book I have read from this author. The first one was "Sleeping Beauty" (which was amazing). This author seems to have a plot pattern he likes to follow, but I don't care! I loved this book. I have never listened or read a book that has plot twists that this author uses, so I am very happy with him. This book kept me on the edge of my seat.

Good Story, Poor Narration

I liked the story; it kept me guessing. I really wish it had a different narrator, though. Or perhaps it was also the way it was edited. I don't care for her voice, but the worst part was the timing. Both distracted from the story. Too bad. . .

Voice of the reader takes away from the story

As much as I like Phillip Margolin.....I had a difficult time with this book because of the woman reader. She was constantly trying to sound like various male voices and at times it was testing my patience. The story would have been more interesting if a man's voice was used because there are so few female characters that when he wanted to sound like a woman it wouldn't be often and therefore wouldn't take away from the story. This woman reader tries too hard to give the male voices accents that it is distracting. Come on Phillip....you have good stories but you need someone to read them better and make them real.

Good book - poor narrator

This book has a basically interesting plot but the narration is terrible. The woman narrator's attempt to portray an older man with basso profundo speech was so unexpected and so unlikely I burst out laughing. Also I sometimes wonder where male authors find their female characters. Amanda appears to have oatmeal between her ears. Who else would set out alone to an isolated cabin to meet a man thought to be a brutal serial murderer. The women lawyers I know are bright, independent and most unlikely to put themselves in the path of danger just to please Daddy. But the twisted surgeon in this book is a truly chilling character.

Juvinile

Simply not a very well crafted story with juvenile dialogue and plot.. Hard to consider it an adult offering.

Oh That Voice!

I agree with several other readers of this novel, the narrator is really terrible but the story is pretty good. I almost gave up on the book because of the reader. She's probably a very nice person but needs another profession.

Something is Wrong with the way Margolin is put together

SICK highly detailed descriptions of grisly torture in nearly every chapter. What a WASTE of an audible credit.

Wanted to like it but did not

I like the author and wanted to try a new series, especially featuring a female protagonist. The story had an interesting set-up but very predictable. The audio quality was VERY poor. The narrator was great when she was doing female voices but terrible when trying to do male voices. Everything about this book felt dated.

Narration I thought was terrible. She was horrible

Narrator ruin the story line all together. I have always enjoyed books by Mr. Margolin books until now.
