Publisher's summary

Welcome to the Custer Hill Club, a men's club, set in a luxurious hunting lodge, whose members include America's powerful business leaders, military men, and government officials. The club is a place to relax with old friends, but one fall weekend, the club's Executive Board gathers to talk about 9/11 and finalize a retaliation plan, known by a code name: Wild Fire.

That weekend, a member of the Federal Anti-Terrorist Task Force is found dead. It's up to Detective John Corey and his wife, FBI Agent Kate Mayfield, to unravel a terrifying plot that starts with the Custer Hill Club and ends with American cities locked in the crosshairs of a nuclear device. Corey and Mayfield are the only ones who can prevent global chaos from being unleashed.

Critic reviews

"The novel presents a what-if scenario that's so plausible we have to remind ourselves that DeMille is making the whole thing up." (Booklist)
"This tour de force of relentless narrative power neither stops nor slows for twists or turns, but charges straight ahead in the face of danger." (Publishers Weekly)

JOHN GETS IN AND OUT OF PROBLEMS AGAIN.

Would you listen to Wild Fire again? Why?

Absolutely. Full of action and keeps you trying to read John's mind.

What did you like best about this story?

I love how Cory keeps a step ahead of your thoughts and gets into trouble, without trouble.

Have you listened to any of Scott Brick’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, I like Brick's performances and this one keeps my admiration.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

A lot of laughing.

One Big Technical Error

What did you love best about Wild Fire?

John's rapier wit. Dozens of instances throughout.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Mostly, but the whole ELF radio transmitter and messaging part of the plot was a faux pas. ELF is needed to communicate (one-way) with deeply submerged submarines. Here ELF is used only to communicate with suitcase bombs in hotel rooms in SFO and LAX. Ordinary radio would do that job.No need to build the ELF transmitter in the special location needed for ELF coupling. Also, ELF carrier signals travel at the speed of light, it is the data modulation that proceeds slowly, maybe only one character per minute can be transmitted.

Which scene was your favorite?

Bear bangers in use, or about to be used.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, but way to long to stay awake.

Any additional comments?

Sometimes John Corey is fun and entertaining in one book, but not in the next. It's odd.

Struggled to finish.

Wife nags enough to make you think no way Corey could do this alone. Story line could be changed to make it believable.

OK

This is the first DeMille book I have listened to, but I have read all of his prior work. This is one of his lesser efforts. The premise is plausible and the science seems credible, but I think his John Corey and Kate Mayfield characters have run their course. Their interactions and dialogue have become predictable and repetetive at this point. Unless he finds a way to freshen them up, he should quit while he is not too far behind. If this was your first encounter with John Corey, perhaps the banter would be more interesting. This book was entertaining enough to pass the time, but certainly no gem. I thought Charm School, Plum Island, and The Lion's Game were much better.

Excellent!

I really love the John Corey series even though he's a jerk! They are thrilling, suspenseful and scary! Scary because it is all too possible for these stories to become more than just fiction! DeMille is very thorough in his research. And Scott Brick is one of the best readers ever!! I wouldn't be able to listen to a John Corey book if read by someone else.

Great read

This is another of Nelson DeMille's "can't put it down" books. The author has a tremendous talent for describing believable characters and making the story come alive by pulling the reader into the action (unlike Ludlum, who muddles around and leaves one in the lurch). I recommend highly all of DeMille's books; if you want a great read, you can't do better than this guy.

Wild Fire

Excellent read of an outstanding book. Read with some emotion and character inflection. Some voice differentiation for character recognition. A very exciting and realistic fiction. Author includes many real facts from the early 21st century, real newspaper quotes, real agencies, a real thrill. Couldn't put it down.

Great Read

Not only is this a great story, but also had me laughing all the time at John Corey's wit. This has humor, suspense, and I had to drive around the block to keep listinig to finish the chapter, this would make an excellent movie. You will not be disapointed. Something fiction but also makes you think could this really happen....
