Watching You

Marnie Logan often feels like she's being watched. Nothing she can quite put her finger on - a whisper of breath on the back of her neck, or a shadow in the corner of her eye - and now her life is frozen. Her husband Daniel has been missing for more than a year. Depressed and increasingly desperate, she seeks the help of clinical psychologist Joe O'Loughlin. Joe is concerned by Marnie's reluctance to talk about the past, but then she discovers a book packed with pictures, interviews with friends, former teachers, old flames and workmates Daniel was preparing for her birthday.

I am an artist, living in Cairns, Queensland, Australia right next to the Great Barrier Reef. I listen to audiobooks everyday while making art and on into the night. I really like mysteries with a good serving of suspense on the side that keep you wondering right to the end. However, I won't say no to any entertaining and well written book which has been read by an excellent narrator.

    "Brilliant series, by brilliant author."
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

It's not very often that an author this good comes along. Michael Robotham is an excellent writer, crafting his writing elegantly and without unnecessary flourish. He dialogue is clever and shines when a good narrator such as Sean Barrett performs it. The only other narrator to better Barrett performing Robotham was Crispin Redman performing The Suspect. His voices were just wonderful - especially for the policeman Ruiz. Books of this quality are hard to put down; you want them to go on forever. The plot was intelligent and original, and the ending extremely satisfying and it left me with a smile. If you're reading this, you must love a good mystery/thriller but don't like wasting your time or a credit on a mediocre book.
I can assure you this book is definitely not mediocre. It will tick all your boxes and more. Please buy it and enjoy!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Watching You?

For me, the entire book shines, without any particular moment being the most memorable. Having said that, the appearance of Malcolm was very memorable, as was each appearance in the book of Owen. I won't say why, as the reader will discover for themselves, on listening to this wonderful book.

What about Sean Barrett’s performance did you like?

I like the way Sean Barrett, for me, speaks with virtually no accent. OK, it's mildly British, but understated. He performs the book well changing from narrative stretches into the various dialogues in a masterful way and always engaging the listener by injecting interest, activity and mood into his performance.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, I felt like laughing and crying but most of all I felt that tingle of expectation and suspense that prevented me from turning the book off to go to sleep. There were many occasions where I empathised with the various characters and they all played believable parts in the story. Finally, the book made me sorry, sorry that it was over......

    Any additional comments?

Please Michael Robotham, write another excellent novel in this series soon, and meanwhile keep safe and well.

    "Can't stop listening"
Where does Watching You rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

In a league of its own. Maybe as good as 'Watching you' also by Michael Robotham

Who was your favorite character and why?

Piper Hadley. One can understand the immaturity, innocence and ignorance of a lonely teenage girl

Have you listened to any of Sean Barrett’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes. In 'Watching You. He is an excellent narrator

    Any additional comments?

I hope to find more of this standard by Audible

    "First class thriller"

This is one of those books that I couldn't stop listening to as the narrative powers one with twists and turns, red herrings and surprises. There aren't too many characters so the main ones are vivid and memorable. I didn't guess the final truth that is only revealed as the book races to the final denouement.
The narrator is excellent and the writing is crisp and to the point without too many superfluous details nor digressions into the author's musical tastes voiced through one of the characters: a fault of some other crime/thriller writers!

    "Absolutely gripping"

Another gripping listen from Michael Robotham that had me listening compulsively over a couple of days. The plot moves along at a good pace with some fantastic twists and turns. Sean Barrett's narration is as mesmerising as ever, his dark menacing tone suits this novel perfectly.

"Joe is back in top form"

Another brilliant Joe O'Loughlin novel with perfect narration from Sean Barrett. I wish it had gone on longer and I should have rationed it out in smaller sections. Anyway it gave me 3 great days of listening pleasure. This is a superb series of books.

"EVERYTHING YOU COULD WANT IN A THRILLER"

I have to admit, I am a huge fan of Michael Robotham and Sean Barrett, so anything written by Robotham and read by Barrett is an audio book of the highest quality.

The writing is as good as any you will find in the genre, fast-moving, daring, erudite, with well fleshed characters and a plot that is all too believable; all this is punctuated by fascinating psychological facts. If you are a lover good storytelling this one is for you. But be warned, the story is so compelling you may find it hard to find the off switch! This is a great audio book.

    "Another gripping story"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this, but with the proviso that they won't get anything done until the end.

What did you like best about this story?

    Extremely deep and believable.

What does Sean Barrett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

He is one of the best narrators I have found, his voice draws you right into the story.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Superb. I think whole of Michael Robotham books would be worthy of film recognition

    Any additional comments?

Thank you Michael Robotham for another brilliant novel.... Now I am waiting for the next.

    "A Great Listen"
Would you listen to Watching You again? Why?

This was one of those books that you really don't want to turn off! It started off as a rather mundane story about a woman and her children trying to survive after her husband went missing. After that the best way to enjoy this story is to carry on listening............

Which scene did you most enjoy?

The end chapters are really dramatic and lead to a conclusion that is unexpected.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

I don't think that this film would transpose into a film

    Any additional comments?

A really enjoyable thriller. I will listen to the book again despite knowing the outcome. Well written. Thank you

    "My new favourite author"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Such a gripping tense storyline. It had me hooked in from the very start and twists and turns brilliantly.

What other book might you compare Watching You to, and why?

This was very like Accidents Happen by Louise Millar but both stand alone as fantastic reads. I read them both one after the other and just couldn't stop listening to either of them

What does Sean Barrett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

He has the best voice ever for adding darkness, danger and foreboding to a thriller story. Love books read by him

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

The person you think is watching you is never who you expect

    Any additional comments?

Just fabulous, I'm now a big Michael Robotham fan

    "Terrifying but compulsive listening"
If you could sum up Watching You in three words, what would they be?

    Chilling; puzzling; enthralling

What was one of the most memorable moments of Watching You?

The part where Marnie discovers Elijah's secret in the cupboard; the scene with Joe and Malcolm in the bathroom towards the end of the book.

What does Sean Barrett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

No one does a creepy pervert voice like Sean Barrett! He plays the sociopath admirably

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me afraid, and got me twisted in knots trying to work out the ending. Completely hooked on listening, but probably wouldn't listen to alone.

    Any additional comments?

Michael Robotham is an awesome writer, though there is a strand of sameness that runs through his some of his books. I worry that he's really a sadistic outsider who used to be in the British Army...

"and a sting in the tail"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Without doubt. The thing is, it was not predictable. At every chapter there was a twist, but it was not a twist for the sake of a twist, nor was it unlikely. I found all the plot to be plausible.

What did you like best about this story?

The book created an atmosphere of being watched...as intended. Even when not listening to the book, there was a legacy of suspicion, paranoia in the back of my mind. How sad is it that I deliberately created driving chores and went to bed early....in order to find out what was happening next....!!

Which scene did you most enjoy?

The last two minutes.... Great characters, great character interplay and yip. the sting in the tail....

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

....you might NOT be that paranoid....

    Any additional comments?

I must comment on the talents of the narrator, Sean Barrett.
Absolutely fabulous performance. Super super super.
