Publisher's summary

After his wife, Helen, is brazenly abducted before his eyes, Special Agent Pendergast furiously pursues the kidnappers, chasing them across the country and into Mexico. But then, things go terribly, tragically wrong; the kidnappers escape; and a shattered Pendergast retreats to his New York apartment and shuts out the world.

But when a string of bizarre murders erupts across several Manhattan hotels - perpetrated by a boy who seems to have an almost psychic ability to elude capture - NYPD Lieutenant D'Agosta asks his friend Pendergast for help. Reluctant at first, Pendergast soon discovers that the killings are a message from his wife's kidnappers. But why a message? And what does it mean?

When the kidnappers strike again at those closest to Pendergast, the FBI agent, filled anew with vengeful fury, sets out to track down and destroy those responsible. His journey takes him deep into the trackless forests of South America, where he ultimately finds himself face to face with an old evil that - rather than having been eradicated - is stirring anew... and with potentially world-altering consequences.

Confucius once said: "Before you embark on a journey of revenge, first dig two graves." Pendergast is about to learn the hard way just how true those words still ring.

Wow! This was one of their best!!!

I love Pentergast and can't wait for the next book. The narrator Rene Auberjonois is the only voice for this series, he's amazing. Tricking dialog he floats through and his tone and control are the best ever to listen to. His accents are dead on and you won't be distracted or lulled into wandering away from the story because it's riviting. This was NOT a cliffhanger, but you know there will be more to come.

He's Back!

Great start to a new beginning! Having read the other books, the narration was off from what I thought Pendergast would sound like...

Pendergast comes out of his funk

Rating: 3.5
Preston and Child have found a way to have a common core of characters and really build on them. After the murder of Helen Agent Pendergast falls apart. He is contemplating suicide but just can't bring himself to do it quite yet. D'Agosta is worried about his friend but is in the middle of a big case professionally. Once the case makes a bizarre turn D'Agosta knows the Pendergast can step in and help. While all of this is going on Corrie Swanson reunites with her father who happens to be wanted a bank robbery. She is taking the skills she has been developing helping Pendergast to try to figure out who framed her father. Dr. Felder spends time hunting down sketches from an artist who sketched Constance back in the 1880's. His searches to validate the woman who he has come to love have been a trying subplot throughout the story also. When Pendergast finds out that he has twin sons and they have been in Novo Godoi' a Nazi village in Brazil. He goes through everything to try to save his sons. This story was a little more over the top than some of the Pendergast stories, but after 9 books I guess sometimes things get a little out of control.

The BEST Pendergast

What did you love best about Two Graves?

This is no doubt the best Pendergast novel to date. Lots of action, twists and turns and many surprises. Don't pass this one up. 5 STARS

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

You don't want to put this book down if reading or if listening to Audible you won't want to turn it off.

Which character – as performed by Rene Auberjonois – was your favorite?

Pendergast...Rene Auberjonois is fantastic with all the characters.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There were quite a few moving elements to the story but I will not name any in particular. I do not want to ruin any aspect of the story for other listeners or readers.

Any additional comments?

I hope Rene Auberjonois continues doing the Pendergast novels. He is great.

Oh, Come On!

With this book, the authors finally jumped the shark while nuking the fridge for good measure. The opening section feels completely disconnected to the rest of the book, like the authors rushed through concluding the events set in motion in the last book because they were in the way of another story they wanted. But that story...just too much, pushes believability too far. Worst book in the series so far.

The Nazi regime is not dead

There is nothing like a great Pendergast story but his deep fall into the abyss of shame and self loathing makes for a heavy listen. I did like this story and there are some very interesting twists that I will obviously not give away.

There are many plots in this book. We have Pendergast re-united with a very special person that sets off a series of catastrophic events, Vincent is dealing with some very strange crimes in the city, Corrie Swanson is on her own solving with a family problem, and Dr. Felder is on a mission to uncover the mysteries of Constance's past.

While there is a lot going on here, each of the plots are well played out and helps take the heavy load off Pendergast's dark troubles.

In listening to this book, I realized one of my favorite characters is his mansion, The Dakota. Every story seems to introduce a new room, route, or special feature of the home that plays to my childhood memories of pretending there might be a secret room somewhere in my own home. If you have felt the same about the other Pendergast outings, you will enjoy Two Graves quite a bit.

With everything I liked about the story, I couldn't stop laughing that Nazi's were in it. Perhaps I am jaded from too many bad Indiana Jones movies.

Odo Shines!

Would you consider the audio edition of Two Graves to be better than the print version?

I never read the print version.

What other book might you compare Two Graves to and why?

Uh... any Star Trek novel... because of Rene Auberjoinois, aka Odo from DS9

Which scene was your favorite?

I dunno... does anyone get laid? LOL

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I could've cried when Pendergast's wife was wacked in Mexico

Any additional comments?

No
