Publisher's summary

In her stunning 200th novel, #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts proves why no one is better when it comes to flawlessly fusing high-stakes suspense with red-hot romance" (Booklist, starred review).

Daughter of a cold, controlling mother and an anonymous donor, studious, obedient Elizabeth Fitch finally let loose one night, drinking too much at a nightclub and allowing a strange man’s seductive Russian accent to lure her to a house on Lake Shore Drive.

Twelve years later, the woman now known as Abigail Lowery lives alone on the outskirts of a small town in the Ozarks. A freelance security systems designer, her own protection is supplemented by a fierce dog and an assortment of firearms. She keeps to herself, saying little, revealing nothing. Unfortunately, that seems to be the quickest way to get attention in a tiny southern town.

The mystery of Abigail Lowery and her sharp mind, secretive nature and unromantic viewpoint intrigues local police chief Brooks Gleason, on both a personal and professional level. And while he suspects that Abigail needs protection from something, Gleason is accustomed to two-bit troublemakers, not the powerful and dangerous men who are about to have him in their sights.

And Abigail Lowery, who has built a life based on security and self-control, is at risk of losing both.

Thoroughly enjoyable

The story line was well written and flowed very well. One mistake or misstep and your whole life is changed. Nothing to do but try to find a way to survive. Well written and well narrated.

If I compared this book to the Hunger Games, I woud read the witness.

I'm a guy and this is Nora Roberts

So I was pleasantly surprised at just how much she got right . . .from a guys perspective. The characters were well developed. The location was depicted so well I could imagine being there. I am still not a big fan of female voice actors speaking the man's part but Julia did a fine job of it and I would listen to her again. While it is a chicks book, its Not just a chick book. The story line had plenty of action and it held my interest. I hate blood bath or senseless killings. So I was pleased that the one short part of the story involving both was handled quickly and without the gore.

Creative and entertaining

This is now in my top 10 favorite stories from NR. The characters are complex but likable and the story makes you sit in the driveway long after arriving home because you just don't want to hit that stop button. Elizabeth/Liz/Abigail is a great character who is brilliant, but socially stunted due to her controlling mother. I loved how her character didn't just mature magically into a well-adjusted woman, but rather slowly evolved with the support of Brooks. The fast pace of the story coupled with an insightful glimpse into a person who isn't perceived as "normal" by society (much like children with Aspergers), is a wonderfully unique point of view that gives this book its fresh feel. The only ding is that the narrator just ok. She starts out a bit stilted-- enunciating every. word. very. carefully. However as the story unfolds, she does a better job acting out the parts rather than reciting it like a school paper. What is it with the narrators NR's publishers pick? Give me Sandra Burr or even better, Jim Dale!

Good Suspense

Good read, suspenseful. However definitely rated R. Uses the F word several times along with several other curse words. At least 3 explicit sex scenes. should be for Adults only.
