Audie Award Nominee, Romance, 2013

Daughter of a cold, controlling mother and an anonymous donor, studious, obedient Elizabeth finally let loose one night, drinking too much at a nightclub and allowing a strange man’s seductive Russian accent to lure her to a house on Lake Shore Drive. The events that followed changed her life forever.

Twelve years later, the woman now known as Abigail Lowery lives alone on the outskirts of a small town in the Ozarks. A freelance programmer, she works at home designing sophisticated security systems. Her own security is supplemented by a fierce dog and an assortment of firearms. She keeps to herself, saying little, revealing nothing. Unfortunately, that seems to be the quickest way to get attention in a tiny southern town.

The mystery of Abigail Lowery intrigues local police chief Brooks Gleason, on both a personal and a professional level. Her sharp, logical mind, her secretive nature, her unromantic viewpoints leave him fascinated but frustrated. He suspects that Abigail needs protection from something, even if he doesn’t know what - and that her elaborate defenses hide a story that must be revealed.

Accustomed to two-bit troublemakers, Gleason is about to walk into the sights of very powerful and dangerous men. And Abigail Lowery, who has built a life based on security and self-control, is at risk of losing both.

She had started to lose me, her books had taken on a boring sameness, but this one was well plotted and enjoyable to listen to.

    "Back story too long."
Would you listen to The Witness again? Why?

Sure and hear things I didn't hear the first time.

What other book might you compare The Witness to and why?

Can't think of one at this moment.

Did Julia Whelan do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Thought that Ms. Whelan sounds a bit young and makes Abigail or Liz sound very young when she moves to Arkansas. Other than that she does a good job. Wish you would have had Suzie Breck do the book. She read Nora's BLUE DAHLIA series some years ago and she did a wonderful job.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I haven't totally finished the book, but Nora always has very good timing in making me laugh, feel sad, or want to crawl into the book and rip the evil person apart as I do when I read her JD ROBB series.

    Any additional comments?

Enjoying it very much so far.

    "Fabulous Nora at her Best!!!"
Would you listen to The Witness again? Why?

I rarely listen to a book more than once, but this one may be the exception. I like ALL of Nora Roberts books, but this has got to be my new Nora favorite. Wow, she put it all together.
I listen to several hundred books a year, so I was glad when I saw this one was over 16 hours. Not once was I ready for it to end----not even when it actually did! I am stingy with strong praise but this book gets mine. Romance, bad guys/good guys, gun fights, female brains---this book has it all. I don't think many men would enjoy it as much as women will. It is more chick lit than general fiction, but a very good book.

    "Wonderful story!"
What made the experience of listening to The Witness the most enjoyable?

Great story! Great characters. Classic Nora. This one goes in the list of her best.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Not really. Edge of the seat is for a writer who doesn't hesitate to kill off a main character. That's not Nora. The suspense is like a old friend. I can enjoy its company because I don't expect it to sneak up and leave a bloody mess. Everything always works out in the end.

Have you listened to any of Julia Whelan’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Not sure if I've heard Julia before.

I wasn't certain of her delivery at first. Seemed a little over the top. I was soon caught up in the story and enjoyed her performance quite a bit.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, but life goes on and I couldn't shut out the world entirely for that many hours.

    Any additional comments?

I wanted Burt to have his moment. There's was so much detail on the security surrounding Abigail's house and Burt's training that I was disappointed not to have a showdown there on the property. I was sad for Burt that he didn't get to bite out anyone's throat and protect Abigail.

I wondered if Burt was a leftover from 'The Search'. Big action from a dog may have been too close to that story.

    Good dog, Burt.

    "Excellent book"
What did you love best about The Witness?

What a great book. The characters were well drawn, and I fell in love with Elizabeth, Abigail and Brooks. The plot held my interest. I loved the way Nora Roberts nailed the southern way of life and idioms.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

I thought the plot was well thought out and it really held my interest. Of course I knew that Nora Roberts' books ended "happily ever after", but I didn't really expect several of the plot twists and the ending.

    Which scene was your favorite?

My favorite scene was when Abigail told her story to Brooks. I think that the author and the narrator handled the characters emotions well.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I really enjoyed the whole book.

    Any additional comments?

Of all of Nora Roberts' recent books, this is my favorite.

What did you love best about The Witness?

I think I had just about given up on Nora Roberts. I don't like her "In Death" work and hadn't read anything of hers that was really great in quite a while. HOWEVER! The Witness did not disappoint. I would put it up there with Blue Smoke, Northern lights and Angel Falls. Great characters, great dialog, great suspense. I'll definitely listen to this one again! YAY Nora! Oh, and fabulous narration! Yay Julia!

"A Good Story, One of Nora Roberts' Best."
What did you love best about The Witness?

There were enough twists and turns in this story to keep it interesting moving right along. A very good story.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Witness?

One of the most memorable moments in the story was when Eliz was 'shot' after testifying at the trial near the end of the story.

What does Julia Whelan bring to the story that you wouldn???t experience if you just read the book?

Julia does a really good job with the reading of the story. She has just the right 'stuff' when she reads it.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The most moving portion of the story was the cold way Eliz's mom conceived her and was rearing her. I enjoyed Eliz's character and her 'grit' when she came face to face with some pretty horrific events and was able to move on to what she wanted to do with her life.

    Any additional comments?

Ms. Roberts has been improving with her story development for several years. She really has become an excellent story teller. Her character development has improved as much as has her twists and turns in her stories. Good work.

"Good story, could have made a great trilogy."
What made the experience of listening to The Witness the most enjoyable?

Great storyline with good characters - would like to have seen the mother receive her comeupance and a few more details in the time Liz/Abigail was hiding from ages 17 to 28.
