Don Winslow is a master story teller. I started reading Don Winslow’s novels after I read a Stephen King review. King wasn’t wrong. Don Winslow is the king of his genre. Read The Power of the Dog Trilogy, The Force, Savages, or anything else by Don Winslow, and you’ll want more—much more. And that ain’t hyperbole, because like Frankie Machine, Don Winslow is old school!

Nice Easy Listen

I enjoyed listening to this book. Light but engaging story, and a good main character. Narration was also very good.

Always a great story

Don Winslow always writes a great story. You actually get lost in his characters. Dennis narrative of the book only adds to the enjoyment.

Winter Kills

Frank Machianno is a San Diego surf bum with a past. A past that unexpectedly rears its ugly head one day as a storm starts rolling into the usually placid environment of Ocean Beach. With a rapid fire pace that matches Don Winslow's straight ahead prose, Frank's life is turned upside down and he has to figure out why -- and then kill whoever is responsible.

You see, Frank is the retired Frankie Machine, deadly and deadly efficient mob hitman. He thinks back to the major hits he has had to execute to try to deduce who is trying to kill him now, after years of quiet anonymous retirement. Winslow manages to get you to the big reveal without giving much away. Great stuff, highly recommended.

This is a Smart, Thrilling Story of Gangstas!

Oh my gosh! This is a great listen! Dennis Boutsikaris performs beautifully, and the story line is engaging, thrilling, shocking, and so much fun! This is NOT just a police procedural, court drama, murder mystery, or any other regular genre that usually appears in "Mysteries and Thrillers." It is all of those things and more, knitted together skillfully by Don Winslow, as Frankie Machine tells a great story about his life in the San Diego mob.

There is course language, violence and sexual commentary, but all that is just part of the pie, part of the life experience of the great Frankie Machine.

Not as interesting as expected but actually love the ending. Just thought I would try something different. Interesting but different kind of book for me.

Don Winslow never disappoints me! Great story with a great narrator. I highly recommend this audio book!

well placed action and another interesting charact

Narrator kept up the pace thru twists and turns. Author creates another group of characters interesting in their own way, but involved in any crime available. Well worth the read.
