Publisher's summary

FBI Agent Pendergast has taken Constance on a whirlwind Grand Tour, hoping to give her closure and a sense of the world that she's missed. They head to Tibet, where Pendergast intensively trained in martial arts and spiritual studies. At a remote monastery, they learn that a rare and dangerous artifact the monks have been guarding for generations has been mysteriously stolen. Pendergast agrees to take up the search.

The trail leads him and Constance to the maiden voyage of the Queen Victoria, the world's largest and most luxurious passenger liner - and to an Atlantic crossing fraught with terror.

unexpected storyline

the story was fun but the narration was lacking. we've been spoiled by narrators who had different voices and this just wasn't Pendergast. it would have been better with a different narrator.

The story line is superb as always.

I loved the mystery mixed with action and class. The dectective is one of my most favorite characters.

Double Whammy

This book is a "two-fer"; a murder mystery wrapped in a disaster on the high seas. Both are developed with precision and detail. The plot moves like an Olympic sprinter! I couldn't wait to resume listening each time I had to stop. It took less than five days to finish, that's how good it is.

Highly recommended.

Great story, fantastic storytelling

I agree with Jerry from Philly. I think fans of Lincoln and Child have come to expect, and appreciate, the bizarre story lines and eccentric characters in the Pendergast stories. This is a first-rate novel with all the twists, turns, surprises and cliffhangers expected from this type of novel. This is the first time I have experienced one of these books on audio, and Rene Auberjonois did an outstanding job of narration. His grasp of the Pendergast personality is amazing, his acting skills superb, and his mastery of the language of these novels without sounding pretentious makes for enjoyable listening. As much as I like reading these novels, I doubt I will ever again buy the hardback if Mr. Auberjonois is narrating. I am sorry I missed his previous readings. An outstanding audiobook! (Somebody who has actually listened to, or read, the book may want to edit the Publisher Summary.)

A good (not great) story - bad narrator

This wasn't the best in the series so far, but it was a good story. The biggest problem with the audiobook is the narrator who has a voice that just puts you to sleep. Scott Brick does a much better job than Rene Auberjonois as a narrator for the "Pendergast" novels.

Best Pendergast So Far

Any additional comments?

Preston and Child finally take the setting out of new york city and the natural history museum. Its very refreshing for any die hard pendergast fan. New narrator gives the audio a less comical/campy feel than the first 7 books. Preston and Child improve their writing craft with every novel. This one was less predictable. Worth a credit if you are in the mood for easy fun fiction.

Not bad, but not my favorite.

I felt like there was soooooo much to the boat scenes that did not really add to the story and could have easily been excluded. Also, this narrator does not do it for me! It took me about 1/2 the book to get used to this narration style. Many of his accents are god awful. I prefer the narrator of the previous books, especially his version of Pendergast. He really captured the intelligence and collected characteristics of Pendergast. This new one does not. I suppose I’ll just have to get used to him though as it looks las though he’s the narrator for the rest of the series. Sigh.

The Wheels of Darkness

I rated this a 4 because it was not as good as the other books in the Pendergast series. The other characters that are usually in the series were not included. Good, but not exceptional. Less adventure. The story did not include as many twists and turns as the previous books in the series. I did not get bored but was not hanging on every word as I have done in the past.

My favorite of the last few Pendergast novels!

I just could not stop listening to this book and it went by too quickly! I am so sad it is over and cannot wait until their next book! A thriller that keeps you in suspense!
