Publisher's summary

In the murky shadows of an alley lies a female’s severed hand. On the tenement rooftop above is the corpse belonging to that hand, a red-haired woman dressed all in black, the body nearly decapitated. Two strands of silver hair — not human — cling to her body. They are Rizzoli’s only clues, but they’re enough for her and medical examiner Maura Isles to make a startling discovery: This violent death had a chilling prequel. Nineteen years earlier, a horrifying murder-suicide in a Chinatown restaurant left five people dead. One woman connected to that massacre is still alive: a mysterious martial arts master who knows a secret she dares not tell, a secret that lives and breathes in the shadows of Chinatown. A secret that may not even be human. Now she’s the target of someone, or something, deeply and relentlessly evil. Cracking a crime resonating with bone-chilling echoes of an ancient Chinese legend, Rizzoli and Isles must outwit an unseen enemy with centuries of cunning — and a swift, avenging blade.

book 9, but stand alone

This is called book 9 in the series, but it is mostly a stand alone novel. It is also mostly Rizzoli and very little Isles.

I started reading TG because of the weirdness she often puts in her books. A good amount of inventiveness can make up for lack of writing skill. This book had less creativeness, but yet the writing has not improved. I liked the story, but had trouble getting into it.I did not feel empathy for the characters. If you are a TG fan then it is worth your credit, if you have not read TG, then start with The Surgeon, probably her best. I also liked Life Support, Gravity, The Apprentice and Ice Cold.

Gerritsen and Eby must be good buddies, cause I can't figure out why Tess is sabotaging her books by letting Eby kill them. Ice Cold was a good book, but Eby read it like it was her first book ever. This book was not near as bad, less weirdness to her voice, also less inflection, less emotion, less everything. I will keep buying and listening to books by Gerritsen, but she is losing possible new fans by letting Eby learn how to read on her books. Tess you are a star now, so do like Stephen King and demand only the best readers.

Great one!

I'm a die Hard Tess gerritsen fan and this doesn't disappoint. Kept me wanting more. A few times I thought the author wasted too much time on the chineses mythical stories, but it all tues in at the end. Must read!

Spellbinding

I really liked this book. It is the second one I have listened to by Gerritsen. Keeps you on the edge until the end. Will buy another soon. I like the tv show too, but they are really not the same. The mix of science, culture and police procedural makes this one intense and fun.
