Publisher's summary

In the murky shadows of an alley lies a female’s severed hand. On the tenement rooftop above is the corpse belonging to that hand, a red-haired woman dressed all in black, the body nearly decapitated. Two strands of silver hair — not human — cling to her body. They are Rizzoli’s only clues, but they’re enough for her and medical examiner Maura Isles to make a startling discovery: This violent death had a chilling prequel. Nineteen years earlier, a horrifying murder-suicide in a Chinatown restaurant left five people dead. One woman connected to that massacre is still alive: a mysterious martial arts master who knows a secret she dares not tell, a secret that lives and breathes in the shadows of Chinatown. A secret that may not even be human. Now she’s the target of someone, or something, deeply and relentlessly evil. Cracking a crime resonating with bone-chilling echoes of an ancient Chinese legend, Rizzoli and Isles must outwit an unseen enemy with centuries of cunning — and a swift, avenging blade.

The Silent Girl

Great story about a string of murders in New York’s China Town, lot of excitement, kung fu and swordsmanship.

Boston accent

I read Ice Cold prior to this book and did not remember Rizzoli having a Boston accent. That one bit of continuity of the saga’s bothered me. I also wanted to read more about Rat and Isles. Otherwise, I recommend this book and plan to listen to more.

Not like TV show

Det Rizzoli is mostly on her own with this one, it is her turn after all the last book had Maura Isles as the main hero, star, protagonist. This one has shades of Dragon Tattoos all over it. At least the Rizzoli and Isles in the books are not as silly as on the TV show.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This was a really good mystery with interesting twists and turns.

What about Tanya Eby’s performance did you like?

I love Tanya Eby for the Rizzoli and Isles series. She does a really great job. I have heard others but noone sounds the way I think the characters are supposed to sound.

Rizzoli and Isles stories never disappoint

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend it to someone familiar with the series.

What did you like best about this story?

I enjoy "meeting" new characters and the different threads that come together.

What about Tanya Eby’s performance did you like?

At first, I wasn't crazy about her, but compared to narrators of other R&I stories, she was pretty good. I liked her stark variance in the Asian characters versus the very Bostonian characters.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, I listened for a couple of hours at a time and "put it down" for a while and came back to it. I drive about 2 hours a day, and I would listen for a day and a half, then listen to music, then come back to it. Mainly so I don't get "road hypnotized."

Exceptional

I think this is one of the best in the series. The time went by fast listening and trying to figure out who did what. Some mysticism also.

Realistic Emotions

Tess Geristsen is a perfectionist when it comes to creating a puzzle with many edges! Loved the flow of the storyline with different view points. Love it when you don't see it coming!

Good, but not great

I didn't enjoy this as much as her previous novels. Not really sure why, but the plot and characters weren't as engaging. The narrator did a good job, but the tension and suspense just weren't up to par.
