Publisher's summary

In Paradise, nothing is what it seems....

Army Special Agent John Puller is the best there is. A combat veteran, Puller is the man the U.S. Army relies on to investigate the toughest crimes facing the nation. Now he has a new case - but this time, the crime is personal: His aunt has been found dead in Paradise, Florida.

A picture-perfect town on Florida's Gulf Coast, Paradise thrives on the wealthy tourists and retirees drawn to its gorgeous weather and beaches. The local police have ruled his aunt's death an unfortunate, tragic accident. But just before she died, she mailed a letter to Puller's father, telling him that beneath its beautiful veneer, Paradise is not all it seems to be.

What Puller finds convinces him that his aunt's death was no accident… and that the palm trees and sandy beaches of Paradise may hide a conspiracy so shocking that some will go to unthinkable lengths to make sure the truth is never revealed.

Favorite Baldacci book so far

This is the seventh Baldacci book I have listened to and only the second one that earned five stars. Coincidently I listened to it after having just finished "One Minute Out" by Mark Greaney. Both books deal with illegal pipelines of human slavery. The similarity of their plot lines was amazing. I also gave the Gray Man book five stars. Given what is going on at our Southern Border, this theme was very timely. John Puller reminds me a bit of Jack Reacher. And if Puller and another character in the book, Mecko, had offspring (which first and foremost would be amazing since both are male), then a carbon copy of Jack Reacher would pop out. This book had several very evil characters and good ultimately prevailed over this evil. There was also an interesting twist at the end, which I didn't anticipate but I found believable for fiction. As a Floridian, I also enjoyed the descriptions of the locales, although Paradise was a fictitious city. I will listen to more in the John Puller series.

Timely and Riveting

Could be ripped from the headlines, if the truth were ever written. A terrific read.

I love this series but this book specifically was a little hard to keep up with because the chapters character jump a lot.... driving in traffic i sometimes missed the jump because i was focused on driving and had to go back to figure out what i missed.

Entertaining Action Novel

Not great literature, but an engaging action tale (with some plot twists) that helps time pass enjoyably. Will continue to read the series as I like the the main protagonist, John Puller, an army CID investigator who is big, tough, and smart (reminiscent of Walt Longmire, one of my favorite characters (by Craig Johnson)).
