Publisher's summary

The Denver Post hails Craig Johnson's Walt Longmire mystery series as a must-read. Joining the four previous novels - all of which have been Book Sense picks - The Dark Horse puts a unique Wyoming twist on the classic British village mystery.

Sheriff Longmire investigates when his instincts tell him something isn't right about a prisoner accused of killing her husband. Wade Barsad, a man with a dubious past, locked his wife's horses in their barn and burned the animals alive. In return, Mary shot Wade in the head six times - or so the story goes. Walt doesn't believe Mary's confession, and he's determined to dig deeper. Posing as an insurance claims investigator, Walt soon discovers other people who might have wanted Wade dead, including a beautiful Guatemalan bartender and a rancher with a taste for liquor, but not for honesty.

The Dark Horse is sure to build on the success of Another Man's Moccasins as Sheriff Longmire unpins his star and ventures into a town without pity to save a woman without hope.

Another GREAT!

Awesome book & narration, as always. Truly enjoyed the interview/discussion between George & Craig @ the conclusion of the book. Please tell Craig to keep writing the Longmire series & George to keep narrating. They’re a perfect pair!

Great story

Good story with plenty of action, mystery and Craig Johnson’s bits of humor. Just what a good book should have.

Character development

Loved the humanness of Walt Longmire! Also the integration of subplots within the storyline. Excellent work!

A Great Story

A real horse lovers book. Ending was not so much to my taste. But overall very enjoyable.

Wasn't Expecting It to Be So Hauntingly Beautiful

This is a beautiful story, in part about a downtrodden woman and her abused horses. It's hard to get the images/feelings about the horses out of your head; there are parts that are shudder-worthy. Luckily, in comes the wonderfully tough and yet sensitive -- and capable --Walt Longmire to lend a hand. Truly a beautiful and at times haunting story, and a good mystery to boot... with an excellent narrator.

Another superb one

Johnson really has a way with characters. In this one, there's a little boy who is so pitch perfect, I hope he comes back — and his mom. It's one of those plots where something happens and then the next chapter is "21 days earlier." Sheriff Longmire goes undercover in a town of 40 people — no small feat — to find out what really happened with a body found in a burned down ranch house. Grade: A-

Good story - a little dark

This is another good Longmire story, although parts the storyline are a little depressing. However, there is humor in the variety of characters and the narrator is excellent.

The one you don't expect to like, but do

when you're sure you know where the story is going and it ends up being down to what the little bird said and you should have known, but didn't see that twist or that one or ... well, it starts off all colorful but soon gets into action and then leaves you with a lump in your throat and your heart in your hand.
