Publisher's summary

Published under a pseudonym, J. K. Rowling’s brilliant debut mystery introduces Detective Cormoran Strike as he investigates a supermodel's suicide in “one of the best books of the year” (USA Today).

After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Strike is down to one client, creditors are calling, and after a breakup with his longtime girlfriend, he’s living in his office.

Then John Bristow walks through his door with a shocking story: His sister, the legendary supermodel Lula Landry - known to her friends as the Cuckoo - famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man.

You may think you know detectives, but you've never met one quite like Strike. You may think you know about the wealthy and famous, but you've never seen them under an investigation like this.

Fast-paced and sharply drawn, this dazzling detective novel inspired Strike, the BBC crime drama series that has captivated millions of viewers worldwide.

Warning: will cause a fierce attachment to fictional characters and an inability to press pause
"The Cuckoo’s Calling is a masterfully written gritty detective story that hooks you and refuses to let go until its pulse-pounding conclusion. J. K. Rowling (writing under a pseudonym) shows off her literary range in this compelling thriller. The only good thing about finishing this one is the three more equally unpauseable Cormoran Strike thrillers that are ready to listen to and get lost in."

Calling You

Cuckoo's Calling will keep calling you back to a good listen. It was what you would expect from a mystery. Predictable but a fun story line and likable characters. Of course all of JK Rowling's books are held up to the gold standard of the Harry Potter series and will never compare.

Yet this is a fun and engaging story.

Expected more...

Not a bad listen but the plot never seemed to get going. It became a predictable detective novel. I expected more from this book.

Great story and great narration!

I loved this story! It kept me entertained and coming back for more. Kudos to the excellent narrator, I very much enjoyed his bringing to life the characters in the book.

Cuckoos calling review

Great story, full of wonderful imagery. The characters are also wonderfully written and come to life. The only critique is the language is a bit rough!

Wow!

I am completely blown away by the magnitude of how much I enjoyed this book. I had very mediocre expectations, but found myself obsessed and hooked to it like the first time that I read Harry Potter. I hope that all seven planned books in the series are written, and I cannot wait to start book two.

Also the performance by Robert Glenister was flawlessly amazing.

Great story & narration. Ending too predictable.

I don't want to spoil this story so I will just say that the story and the characters were fantastic and the narration was flawless. But, I saw the ending coming from very early on and dreaded that resolution. Read it though. Despite the way the story was resolved, this was a very enjoyable book.

WOW

long, complicated and great. Don't start this book if you have anything important to do; it won't get done.

Could have been better

The plot was there, but was poorly told. It seemed to never progress in the storyline, like being in a constant state of going somewhere and never arriving. The end was predictable and disappointing, no real catharsis or "aha!" moment and was loosely tied together to produce the ending result that left too many loopholes and just made the whole thing fall flat. It needed to be deeper, more complex, and a little livelier from chapter to chapter. I didn't hang on every word and find myself thinking about the book when I wasn't listening, nor was I particularly disappointed when I had to pause it.

As I said in the title, it could have been great, I had really high hopes for it. It just didn't deliver. I won't be listening to the sequels any time soon.

Outstanding!

A well written mystery novel with a delightful narrative, well developed characters, no loose ends, just the right amount of red herrings, and an entirely satisfying ending.
