Publisher's summary

Detective Gabriel Allon returns in this stunning thriller of ancient and modern betrayal, long-buried secrets and unthinkable deeds. In Munich, writer Benjamin Stern enters his flat to find a man leafing through his research. When Stern confronts him, the man shoots him, murmurs a few words in Latin, gathers the papers and leaves. In Venice, art restorer and Israeli agent Gabriel Allon reads a message saying that Stern is dead; can he leave immediately? At the Vatican, a priest named Pietro paces in the garden, pondering the discoveries he has made, the enemies he will make, and the journey he must undertake. Silva weaves these three threads into a multilayered mystery peopled with memorable characters and distinguished by rich prose.

Compelling and Captivating

Spectacular. Thrilling action. Truly captures the streets of Venice, Rome, and the other cities and countries travelled by the hero. Combined with the superb performance by the reader, you sometimes wonder how much of what you're reading is really fiction. So entertaining and, in a way, educating.

Always a good listen.

I keep wondering if all that was disclosed about the Catholic Church during WWII is accurate. I can assume if it weren't there would be a rather large legal matter unfolding. The book kept my interest from the first page and the performance was first rate. The voices used help me to visualize the characters and that is a real talent.

Spellbinding

Loved the twists. Also loved the European settings. The history is addictive to the story as well.

Daniel Silva does it again.

Compelling and suspenseful. I really enjoy the Gabriel Allon series. I would highly recommend this book.

Good To The End

Another spell binder from Silva. John Lee is an absolute master at accents, so there is little confusion about just who is speaking. I recommend this as an exciting reveal of Gabriel Along meeting the feisty Ciara.

Action and intrigue in the Vatican

I can only recommend this to anyone who has a strong stomach to confront the excesses of the Catholic Church in the world. If even a third of this were true - and it likely is - it’s pretty appalling. Fast paced, well written, briefly intensely violent, with a “love” interest that could use a bit more relationship development, I enjoyed this enough to probably pick up another one sometime. But I hope it will be a different narrator. This guy was actually pretty good with character differentiation and with the character accents when called for, but his actual rendering of a phrase or place name in French or in Italian was often mispronounced. There’s no excuse for this. You can get someone to pronounce it for you on any number of websites. Just saying. (Tras-TEH-veh-reh!)
