Rene "Boxer" Enriquez grew up on the violent streets of East L.A., where gang fights, robberies, and drive-by shootings were fueled by rage, drugs, and alcohol. When he finally landed in prison - at the age of 19 - Enriquez found an organization that brought him the respect he always wanted: the near-mythic and widely feared Mexican Mafia, La Eme. What the organization saw in Enriquez was a young man who knew no fear and would kill anyone - justifiably or not - in the blink of an eye. That loyalty and his iron will drove him up the ranks as a mob enforcer and ultimately to the upper echelons, where he would help rule for nearly two decades.
Enriquez helped La Eme become the powerful and violent organization that it is now, with a base army of approximately 60,000 heavily armed gang members who control the prison system and a large part of California crime.
Arguably the most dangerous gang in American history, its reach is growing. And now award-winning investigative journalist Chris Blatchford, with the unprecedented cooperation of Rene Enriquez, reveals the inner workings, secret meetings, and elaborate murder plots that make up the daily routine of the Mafia brothers. It is an intense, never-before-told story of a man who devoted his life to a bloody cause only to find betrayal and disillusionment. After years of research and investigation, Blatchford has delivered a historic narrative of a nefarious organization that will go down as a classic in mob literature.

I recommend a reader who can pronounce Spanish words and who has a tad Spanish accent. Overall, great story. Brought me back memories of my delinquent past. SCLA.
I was really stunned by all the details given.
I recommend a narrator with a Spanish language backround who can pronounce the Spanish words better.
I loved it I did not struggle to get through this book. Very well written. This is my 3rd time reading this book. It's very informative. This will help you understand the minds of this criminal organization.
Their we're many memorable moments. the killing of the family in El Monte California was one of them, it really hit me hard. however, there was a memorable moment where the lead character Rene overdoses in his cell. the things that his fellow inmate did to keep him from completely passing out until help arrived made me laugh really really hard.
Again, this is my third read and I am sure I will read it a fourth time. the book is that interesting. the narrator did confirm the job but he could really use help with the Spanish slang .
Here in Bakersfield California the book is the most stolen item at all the bookstores in Bakersfield. criminals, gang bangers and drug addicts love this book. this is no lie. I wasn't able to locate it in the book store shelves and the customer service person told me that they have to keep the books.
I really recommend the book.
Straight to the heart, loved the book, valuable knowledge. This book will scare the heart of people,if they were to ever think of joining a criminal organization. This book inspires people not to join gangs that its the devils workings to be in a gang,& people should never follow negative friends or influences, and to always follow your dreams, and stand firm in jesus christ foot steps & spirit & to read a bible also be a good person before his or her life is finished.
