Publisher's summary

Chronicling the rise and fall of Sex Money Murder, one of the most violent and notorious gangs of its era, and of the dedicated detectives and prosecutors struggling to stem the tide of violence, reporter Jonathan Green creates a visceral and devastating portrait of a New York City borough.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Bronx had one of the highest per capita murder rates in the country. The reason was simple: as the use of crack cocaine surged, replacing heroin as the high of choice, dealers and gangs staked claims to territory and consumers through intimidation and murder, and families found themselves fractured by crime and incarceration. Based on years of research and extraordinary access to former gang members, Green creates an epic character-driven narrative, drawing on first-person interviews, police reports, and court transcripts to offer a unique and engrossing work of gritty urban reportage. Magisterial in its scope, Sex Money Murder offers an extraordinary perspective on modern-day America.

Sad but accurate interpretation

Obviously the dedication to present a through literary work is evident.
The account is a great look at the disheartening life of persons not afforded what others might have. The choices, if any, are very narrow and life is dictated by the lack of those missing choices.
Great work

Totally Compelling

I didn't realize at first that this was a documentary of sorts; not a fiction novel. As disturbing as some of the facts are, I was all in.

A window into a world

The way this book describes the lives of a notorious gang and also the lives of the detectives investigating them is amazing. You don’t just a police drama, you get a window into worlds you don’t know personally and actually understand the communities and people surrounding a world of violence and hardship. This humanizes everyone in the retelling of true events in an amazing way.

you will enjoy

I thoroughly enjoyed the story of a group of guys trying to find their way to the concrete jungle. I will be recommending this to others that enjoy a good true story about a crime syndicate. I wish the author would have pick someone that is knowledgeable of the slang and know how to pronounce it correctly. but overall it's a great book.

Good story, questionable narration

Good story, would’ve been excellent if the narration was done by someone more “in tune” with the dwellings & individuals described in this book.

Great Book

Good stories about the times in NY where things were lawless. For those of us who lived this era this brings back memories.

Great story

Overall a great, exciting book. It’s very awkward to hear the clearly Caucasian narrator read the n word and AAVE

Best book I read and listened to in 2018!!

This book was fantastic! The author did an amazing job weaving the stories of the gang members, victims and cops together. The writing was superb.

The narrator was good, not fantastic, but did not detract from the story.

Anyone that wants to know who about inner city violence should read this book. I may even listen to it again.

A real life look at OGs and brave law enforcement officers that took them down

Green is able to show both sides of the coin in this edge of your seat telling of the origins of the Sex Money Murder gang. It’s a true tell all and Green gets the perspective of two main players in the gang as well as John O’Malley and other law enforcement officers who dedicated about a decade to dismantle the gangs leadership. Green is a great storyteller.
