Publisher's summary

In The Angel Of Darkness, Caleb Carr brings back the vivid world of his bestselling The Alienist but with a twist: this story is told by the former street urchin Stevie Taggert, whose rough life has given him wisdom beyond his years. Thus New York City, and the groundbreaking alienist Dr. Kreizler himself, are seen anew.

It is June 1897. A year has passed since Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, a pioneer in forensic psychiatry, tracked down the brutal serial killer John Beecham with the help of a team of trusted companions and a revolutionary application of the principles of his discipline. Kreizler and his friends - high-living crime reporter Schuyler Moore; indomitable, derringer-toting Sara Howard; the brilliant (and bickering) detective brothers Marcus and Lucius Isaacson; powerful and compassionate Cyrus Montrose; and Stevie Taggert, the boy Kreizler saved from a life of street crime - have returned to their former pursuits and tried to forget the horror of the Beecham case.

But when the distraught wife of a Spanish diplomat begs Sara's aid, the team reunites to help her find her kidnapped infant daughter. It is a case fraught with danger, since Spain and the United States are on the verge of war. Their investigation leads the team to a shocking suspect: a woman who appears to the world to be a heroic nurse and a loving mother, but who may in reality be a ruthless murderer of children.

Fast-paced and chilling, The Angel Of Darkness is another tour de force from Caleb Carr, a novel of modern evil in old New York.

Couldn’t stop listening

Interesting characters, vivid landscapes, compelling storyline. Held my rapt attention until the penultimate resolution involving the Spanish diplomat. Continued past that part to get to the story’s ending about Stevie’s adult life. Story told through Stevie’s voice. Narrator magically conveyed each character. A+ for narration.

Too much in the courtroom

generally an excellent story, but the several chapters in the courtroom were frankly boring. i skipped 'em, and it did not detract from the book at all.

Nice Sequel to "The Alienist"

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend to any lover of historical fiction an certainly to anyone who read and enjoyed The Alienist. I love the New York City setting and the time period. It's actually a history lesson wrapped up in an intriguing tale.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Angel of Darkness?

I loved the inclusion of Clarence Darrow as defense attorney. His approach to the defense was very clever and true to what is said about the actual man.

Which character – as performed by George Guidall – was your favorite?

George Guidall was outstanding. His ability to switch from character to character, each with a distinctive "voice" was nothing short of amazing. It's hard to say which was my favorite. It may be the prosecuting attorney. It could even be Clarence Darrow, or Dr. Kreizler himself.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Maybe, but it's pretty long. If I had any criticism at all, it would be that the book was just a bit longer than it needed to be. Still, I enjoyed it very much.

Good sequel, not great.

Little similarity to tv drama. Original book better, in my opinion. Worth the listen to continue the characterizations.
