What the Critics Say

“What do the New Jersey Mob, bingo, and giraffes have in common? Stephanie Plum and crew. Narrator Lorelei King performs the latest zany antics of Stephanie, Lula, and Connie, along with some sizzling smooches from Morelli and the ever hot Ranger. As Plum goes after the bail-jumping Uncle Sunny, a mobster who is Morelli's godfather, King's performance kicks into high gear, switching accents from Jersey to Italian without a hitch. Sleuthing for Stephanie includes a little black dress, funerals, and bingo. And the giraffe? He's the comic relief in this silly mystery flawlessly delivered King with a different voice for each character--except the giraffe. Combine King's vocal acting with Stephanie's adventures, and you laugh through the whole audiobook.” (AudioFile)

"An improvment over the last -- but not by much"

This story opens with a giraffe and a tranquilizer dart in a thugs butt. Just when you thought you seen it all with Stephanie, you don't come close. This novel is a good improvement over the last. Lula is in fine form with some excellent one liners. All of the central characters are back and so is the love triangle between Ranger, Morelli and Stephanie.

This particular story opens up very slowly and even in the middle of the novel, there is not much life to it. The sad fact is that this series in long in the tooth for those of us who have read them all. Evanovich does a reasonable job making this novel stand-alone. That is, if you read book 20, you will at least follow all of the ins and outs of the story and appreciate the characters.

Evanovich needs to find a new way to breath life into this series and make some decisions for crying out loud. Or perhaps, a mega size novel to wrap it all up and start a new series with different characters. I am luke warm on this Takedown Twenty; an improvement over the last I admit; but not too much.

    "Still funny"

Stephanie is the quirky friend I've loved for many years. But her stories seem to get shorter and the funny stuff is getting a bit worn. Let's ask Janet E. if she could take two years off and get us a great juicy plot that's a 12 hour read. New jokes, some old characters and some new characters mixed in. Who is with me?

"Not as amusing as her other books"
What would have made Takedown Twenty better?

I have read all of the author's other books but was disappointed in this one. The narrator did way too many characters. They needed to pair her up with a man. After reading her other 19 books you picture what the characters would sound like, but having a woman doing a man's voice just didn't cut it for me.

Has Takedown Twenty turned you off from other books in this genre?

    No

Would you listen to another book narrated by Lorelei King?

    Probably.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    I enjoy Stephanie Plums antics

    "Slowly but surely getting better"

This book was entertaining. Yes, the series has become pretty predictable but it still makes me laugh out loud. I enjoy when Ranger's cars get blown up and/or totaled. I like when Bella gives Stephanie the eye. I like that there is a love triangle. Joe and Ranger are great characters and if Stephanie finally picks one, the other will probably fade away or maybe get his own series. King does her usual great job. I can't imagine anyone else as Stephanie.

    "Stephanie get "the eye""

Stephanie Plum, bond enforcement agent, with side kick Lulu must track down a mob boss charged with murder. It turns out that the boss is Stephanie’s boy friend Joe Morelli’s uncle and everyone in the Berg is blocking her from finding him. Morelli’s Sicilian aunt has given Stephanie “the eye” twice and is sending her to hell. I read this series for a laugh. The exploits are so outrageous and Stephanie and Lulu are in revolving mayhem. This book has Lulu chasing a giraffe through the streets of the Berg. The giraffe does not seem to be related to anything else in the story. The book is quick easy to read and funny. Makes a good change of pace, get away from it all book but I think the series has run its course and needs to end. The book is narrated by Lorelei King who does her usual good job.

    "Needed my fix"

Boycotted her last few novels as I was disappointed in the same old, same old. Still no resolve with her love interests or job, etc. However, I found I could not live without Lula and Grandma. Their dialogue is so hilarious that I decided to overlook the lame existence of the rest of it. Now I am addicted again and await No. 23.
