Publisher's summary

Audie Award Finalist, Thriller/Suspense, 2014

For 25 years, Robert Crais has written extraordinary novels of crime and suspense. He is "a master of crime fiction" (Associated Press); "his novels get better with every new book" (Portland Oregonian); "Crais is hands-down the world’s greatest crime writer" (The Huffington Post).

But in Suspect, he may have written his most remarkable novel of all.

LAPD cop Scott James is not doing so well, not since a shocking nighttime assault by unidentified men killed his partner, Stephanie, nearly killed him, and left him enraged, ashamed, and ready to explode. He is unfit for duty - until he meets his new partner.

Maggie is not doing so well, either. The German shepherd survived three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan sniffing explosives before she lost her handler to an IED and sniper attack, and her PTSD is as bad as Scott’s.

They are each other’s last chance. He was a young cop on the rise; she was bred to guard and protect. Now they are shunned and shunted to the side. They are suspect. And together they will set out to investigate the one case that no one wants them to touch: the identity of the men who murdered Stephanie.

Nine months and sixteen days later, they remained free. They were still out there.

What they begin to find is nothing like what Scott has been told, and where it will lead them will take them both through the darkest moments of their own personal hells. Whether they will make it out again, no one can say.

Thrilling, emotional, intense, with some of the best characters and well-crafted writing in all of crime fiction, Suspect is further proof that "Crais just keeps getting better" (Publishers Weekly).

A gripping read, from beginning to end.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, especially if you are an animal lover. The book truly demonstrated the love between animal and human and why dogs are man's best friend. The story was clever, with some interesting twists to build up suspense. I found this book (my first audiobook) easy to listen to and kept my attention right up until the end.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Scotty. His character evolved true to the journey of a human who discovered the love of an animal.

What about MacLeod Andrews’s performance did you like?

Pace of reading was excellent. Enjoyed the fact that the right emotions were transferred via his voice alone - enough so that the story was believable and rang true.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I was gripped in anticipation so much that I struggled to stop listening. Ended up being fairly anti-social in order to finish "reading".

I "SUSPECT" this book is going to impress you!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes! I've been recommending this book to everyone I know who loves audio books, who loves dogs, and who enjoy a good police mystery!

Who was your favorite character and why?

I loved primary characters: Scott and Maggie. I loved how both characters, though broken, managed to reconnect with each other, life and hope. Besides, the author did a heluva job making Maggie real to me...that's pretty remarkable since Maggie is a dog!

Have you listened to any of MacLeod Andrews’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, he's performed a few of Nora Roberts' books and I love the cadence of his voice and how he pulls you into the characters' lives.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I cried in opening of the book...where we learn about Maggie. My heart broke in the first chapter where Scott loses his partner. I found myself "talking" to the characters on my treadmill, as the story unfolded.

Excellent book

Really enjoyed this book, I felt it was very well written and held my attention from start to finish. I enjoyed seeing the lead characters transition to a "Dog Man" the most, the bond built between canine officers and thier handlers is simply amazing.

Great story. Wish it were longer!

Nice job developing the relationship between the man and the dog. The story developed well and I was sure there wasn’t enough time left to finish it, then everything suddenly kicked into high gear and it was full throttle all the rest of the way. Liked the story, the vantage points from different people. Altogether an enjoyable story. Just wish it was longer and had more time to spread out. That doesn’t mean the story wasn’t complete. It was just well done and ended too fast.

A refreshing change

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This was an interesting change to the tough guy, hero, type of cop story. This was a struggling. damaged, ordinary guy. He did nothing superhero. The real story here was not about finding the bad guys, which was done well. It was the story of the main character and the relationship between he and his dog. Neither of which wanted to be where they were when their relationship starts. They story provides an interesting twist when the narration becomes from the "first person" dog's view. I though some of that was a little repetitive, but a small criticism of a very good story done quite well.
