Publisher's summary

Audie Award Finalist, Thriller/Suspense, 2014

For 25 years, Robert Crais has written extraordinary novels of crime and suspense. He is "a master of crime fiction" (Associated Press); "his novels get better with every new book" (Portland Oregonian); "Crais is hands-down the world’s greatest crime writer" (The Huffington Post).

But in Suspect, he may have written his most remarkable novel of all.

LAPD cop Scott James is not doing so well, not since a shocking nighttime assault by unidentified men killed his partner, Stephanie, nearly killed him, and left him enraged, ashamed, and ready to explode. He is unfit for duty - until he meets his new partner.

Maggie is not doing so well, either. The German shepherd survived three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan sniffing explosives before she lost her handler to an IED and sniper attack, and her PTSD is as bad as Scott’s.

They are each other’s last chance. He was a young cop on the rise; she was bred to guard and protect. Now they are shunned and shunted to the side. They are suspect. And together they will set out to investigate the one case that no one wants them to touch: the identity of the men who murdered Stephanie.

Nine months and sixteen days later, they remained free. They were still out there.

What they begin to find is nothing like what Scott has been told, and where it will lead them will take them both through the darkest moments of their own personal hells. Whether they will make it out again, no one can say.

Thrilling, emotional, intense, with some of the best characters and well-crafted writing in all of crime fiction, Suspect is further proof that "Crais just keeps getting better" (Publishers Weekly).

Excellent in all regards!

This may be one of his best novels yet. Performance was great, story held my focus and was especially enjoyable for a dog lover. I hope we will hear more from Scott and Maggie, soon!

Worth the read. Starts slow, but at the end you will know why.

This is a story of two who lost their partners only to bond together and in doing so not only solved an intriguing case, but found the true meaning of being a pack.

The Best police mystery I've every read!

Any additional comments?

I am usually only warm when it come to this genre but this book really surprised me. One of the main characters (and my favorite, hands-down) is the dog Maggie. I usually tend toward SciFi, especially when the author brings me into the consciousness of an alien character but I don't think I've ever read an author who was as able to bring the consciousness of a dog to the game like Robert Crais. It reminds me of the Jack London books that I used to love so much as a youngster, but somehow this story even surpasses those. I don't tend to be an overly-emotional person so when a book really moves me to joy or tears, it will get high marks unless it is just poorly written or narrated. This story was not only exceptionally well written, but the narration was one of the best. There were many moments of sorrow, anger and even laughter throughout the book but the end brought tears of joy. Unless you hate dogs, even if you don't like cops, this is a must read!

Great Character Development

I admit that I'm a dog lover, but this book has given me a new appreciation. of my own 12 yo terrier mix. Although satisfying, he mystery wasn't as gripping as the performance and the character development. The main character was a believably lovable asshole and his service dog's broken phsychy unfolded along with his recovery. Aspects of this novel were unique, as in a dog's narrative. I thoroughly enjoyed the adrenaline, mourning, and healing of the dog's personality.

Wonderful book.

Where does Suspect rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This book rates among the best audiobooks I've listened to.

Who was your favorite character and why?

You will fall in love with Maggie and Scott.

Have you listened to any of MacLeod Andrews’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I really enjoyed his performance in the Sandman Slim series but this performance is my favorite. MacLeod is very talented and he creates memorable characters.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I cried and laughed but this book is also action packed. At certain parts of the book I wasn't able to sit still, I paced the floor.

Any additional comments?

Learn about dogs bonding and scent

Good story great suspense. Ended too soon. One could discern what was coming but it was so well told one still kept listening to find out how it happened.
