Publisher's summary

Audie Award Finalist, Thriller/Suspense, 2014

For 25 years, Robert Crais has written extraordinary novels of crime and suspense. He is "a master of crime fiction" (Associated Press); "his novels get better with every new book" (Portland Oregonian); "Crais is hands-down the world’s greatest crime writer" (The Huffington Post).

But in Suspect, he may have written his most remarkable novel of all.

LAPD cop Scott James is not doing so well, not since a shocking nighttime assault by unidentified men killed his partner, Stephanie, nearly killed him, and left him enraged, ashamed, and ready to explode. He is unfit for duty - until he meets his new partner.

Maggie is not doing so well, either. The German shepherd survived three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan sniffing explosives before she lost her handler to an IED and sniper attack, and her PTSD is as bad as Scott’s.

They are each other’s last chance. He was a young cop on the rise; she was bred to guard and protect. Now they are shunned and shunted to the side. They are suspect. And together they will set out to investigate the one case that no one wants them to touch: the identity of the men who murdered Stephanie.

Nine months and sixteen days later, they remained free. They were still out there.

What they begin to find is nothing like what Scott has been told, and where it will lead them will take them both through the darkest moments of their own personal hells. Whether they will make it out again, no one can say.

Thrilling, emotional, intense, with some of the best characters and well-crafted writing in all of crime fiction, Suspect is further proof that "Crais just keeps getting better" (Publishers Weekly).

Surprinsgly Engaging

Would you listen to Suspect again? Why?

Yes. I didn't expect to love this book. I'm used to hearing a story from two or more people's perspective, but suspect also gave the dog's perspective. Wonderful narration. I never had to rewind to figure out who was speaking to me.

Which character – as performed by MacLeod Andrews – was your favorite?

Scott and Maggie both were my favorite characters. I'm almost ashamed to admit that I learned something about interacting with my own dog from this story. My husband hates audiobooks and even he enjoyed listening to snipets of this book.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. Listening to this book helped me paint the bedroom and living room. I never wanted it to end, plus there was always a twist that I wanted to hear played out.

A dog person’s book, absolutely!

Love it! Got my eyes wet right at the beginning of the book with Maggie and Pete’s story. Execellent narration and story development. The story flowed so well I didnt notice I was 3 hour into it until I looked at the clock! This is a first since I have started listening to audio books. I confess that, for me, the most important part was to know what would happen to Maggie at the end of the story. And I am happy with the end. I agree that this pair would make for an excellent book series.

Enjoyed having a dog as one of the main characters

I enjoyed this book enough that I will definitely check out a second book by Robert Crais. I am not familiar with this author so it will be interesting to see if he includes dogs in each of his books.

I did really enjoy the dog perspective in this novel, and fell in love with Maggie. Her "feelings" were as real as the humans. Nice suspense, and enjoyed a more realistic storyline than some of the fictional police stories. The main characters seem believeable, although the story line is a little bit of stretch. Even some of the ancillary characters, were not caricatures, but actual people. But the best part really is experiencing the evolution of relationship between Scott and Maggie.

Thanks, looking for another Crais title.

Excellent! A must listen!

Crais does an excellent job of developing this relationship between the cop and his dog, who he didn't really want. They both have PTSD, and the story helps you have an emotional insight into how that feels. I really loved this story. It was complex, suspenseful, emotional, and well crafted. Great use of a credit!!

A WONDERFUL LISTENING EXPERIENCE!

If you could sum up Suspect in three words, what would they be?

Dramatic, suspenseful, thrilling

What did you like best about this story?

The bond between Maggie and Scott- two wounded warriors.

Have you listened to any of MacLeod Andrews’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This was my first book narrated by MacLeod Andrews. He gives an excellent performance, easily transitioning from character to character. He brings the characters to life.
