Publisher's summary

Audie Award Finalist, Thriller/Suspense, 2014

For 25 years, Robert Crais has written extraordinary novels of crime and suspense. He is "a master of crime fiction" (Associated Press); "his novels get better with every new book" (Portland Oregonian); "Crais is hands-down the world’s greatest crime writer" (The Huffington Post).

But in Suspect, he may have written his most remarkable novel of all.

LAPD cop Scott James is not doing so well, not since a shocking nighttime assault by unidentified men killed his partner, Stephanie, nearly killed him, and left him enraged, ashamed, and ready to explode. He is unfit for duty - until he meets his new partner.

Maggie is not doing so well, either. The German shepherd survived three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan sniffing explosives before she lost her handler to an IED and sniper attack, and her PTSD is as bad as Scott’s.

They are each other’s last chance. He was a young cop on the rise; she was bred to guard and protect. Now they are shunned and shunted to the side. They are suspect. And together they will set out to investigate the one case that no one wants them to touch: the identity of the men who murdered Stephanie.

Nine months and sixteen days later, they remained free. They were still out there.

What they begin to find is nothing like what Scott has been told, and where it will lead them will take them both through the darkest moments of their own personal hells. Whether they will make it out again, no one can say.

Thrilling, emotional, intense, with some of the best characters and well-crafted writing in all of crime fiction, Suspect is further proof that "Crais just keeps getting better" (Publishers Weekly).

Heartwarming and engaging!

What did you love best about Suspect?

I've never read anything by Robert Crais, but his books have been on my "want to read one of these" list, so I decided to try this one because of the good reviews. And I wasn't disappointed, although I realize this novel is not like most of Crais's books. I loved Maggie the most, but my heart also went out to Scotty who was so alone and hurting until Maggie came into his life. My heart broke when he was hurt again.

What did you like best about this story?

The characters -- Scott, Leland, and the detectives who supported Scott. And, of course, I loved Maggie and like the way Crais "got into her head."

What does MacLeod Andrews bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The narration was quite good, with clear definition between characters, although I didi think the high squeaky voice used when talking to Maggie was a bit overdone.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Scotty was shot and Maggie was protecting him from Crowley. I wanted Scotty to live, and Maggie wouldn't let Crowley help him, but I was also incredibly moved by Maggie's dedication to her alpha.

Any additional comments?

I will definitely read another book by Robert Crais, but it will have a hard time living up to this one!!

be prepared

I was in tears listening to the first chapter while I was on the bus and the thought of taking my headphones off never occurred to me - it was that good.

Not a book for cat lovers

Would you listen to Suspect again? Why?

Yes. I was hooked in the first paragraph.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Very much! As the story revealed the layer upon layer of deception, I was kept wondering how deep did the deception go.

Which scene was your favorite?

When Maggie discovered the joy of baloney.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Maggie fought for her Alpha. I had a dog like Maggie and I could identify with her reactions.

Military and police and a dog. Perfect.

I like the author and the reader very much. This isn't a long book - and it went quickly as it was very engaging. If you are a dog lover, this book will be even more special.

A great book.

I am not a dog person but the interaction between a Handler and his dog was truly inspirational. The book was able to to explain the actions and feelings of the dog in a way that was logical and amazing. I really love the book and the narrator. it is probably the best book of the 50-plus books that I have downloaded
