Publisher's summary

Audie Award Finalist, Thriller/Suspense, 2014

For 25 years, Robert Crais has written extraordinary novels of crime and suspense. He is "a master of crime fiction" (Associated Press); "his novels get better with every new book" (Portland Oregonian); "Crais is hands-down the world’s greatest crime writer" (The Huffington Post).

But in Suspect, he may have written his most remarkable novel of all.

LAPD cop Scott James is not doing so well, not since a shocking nighttime assault by unidentified men killed his partner, Stephanie, nearly killed him, and left him enraged, ashamed, and ready to explode. He is unfit for duty - until he meets his new partner.

Maggie is not doing so well, either. The German shepherd survived three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan sniffing explosives before she lost her handler to an IED and sniper attack, and her PTSD is as bad as Scott’s.

They are each other’s last chance. He was a young cop on the rise; she was bred to guard and protect. Now they are shunned and shunted to the side. They are suspect. And together they will set out to investigate the one case that no one wants them to touch: the identity of the men who murdered Stephanie.

Nine months and sixteen days later, they remained free. They were still out there.

What they begin to find is nothing like what Scott has been told, and where it will lead them will take them both through the darkest moments of their own personal hells. Whether they will make it out again, no one can say.

Thrilling, emotional, intense, with some of the best characters and well-crafted writing in all of crime fiction, Suspect is further proof that "Crais just keeps getting better" (Publishers Weekly).

Great Book - Loved the dog too

What made the experience of listening to Suspect the most enjoyable?

I really enjoyed this book. I love animals and really enjoyed the dog as part of the story. Characters are all very likeable and they are easy to connect with.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Kept me on the edge of my seat and I could not wait to hear what happens next.

Have you listened to any of MacLeod Andrews’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is my first but I will definitely read more.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Maggie and Scott's loyalty to each other moved me so much.

Any additional comments?

Great Detective story, great dog story, just a great overall book.

You'll be rooting for man and his best friend!

Where does Suspect rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Much better than I expected! Murder mystery/thriller is not normally my genre of choice and I'd never read Crais, but this is an engaging story that will keep you listening and on the edge of your seat.

What other book might you compare Suspect to and why?

Can't think of another book to compare this to: the story is a combination of murder mystery thriller, human and dog PTSD tale, and story of loyal companionship.

Which character – as performed by MacLeod Andrews – was your favorite?

Drill-sergeant style police canine corps director Leland was the best! Andrews read him beautifully, with the perfect combination of sternness and heart. His dogs love him, his human charges fear him.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

"We can all heal."

Any additional comments?

Loved, loved, LOVED the insight into canine training for bomb-sniffing and police work. As a lifelong doggie lover I am amazed to learn what our loving companions are capable of!

Good Book

Started off good and continued good throughout the book. It was a good book about the relationship between a man and his dog. It also gave a good background on how a dog uses his sense of smell. I enjoyed the book all the way through. I don't like books with a lot of crude language - I found the language in this book appropriate for the content. The reader was easy to listen to and easy to understand. The difference in voices for the different characters was also good. I will be "reading" more books by this author.

Alpha Happy, Pack Happy, Me Happy.

From the heartbreaking beginning, author Robert Craig starts with a hurt, unstable, stressful duo, leading to a heartwarming story between the two. At first, both scarred police officer Scott and K-9 Maggie are both wary of each other, but as times passes, a trust and love is revealed: A trusting and happy pairing. I have to say this is the first audio book I've listened to which made me cry, both tears of sadness and contentment and a loyalty and love that is rare. One of the best Audible books I have listened to. Don't be alarmed. The sadness took a change to lead me on an adventure with unconditional love between the two that made me see and understand the trust between partners working and living together. A great suspense audio book and one of my all-time favorites. Being an animal lover, this one brought feelings of faith, healing of both kinds, happiness and so much more. Narrator MacLeod Andrews is perfection and I will seek other books from both Crais and Andrews. No disappointments here and a suspenseful murder mystery. Please, take a chance on this one. You won't be sorry. It is well worth it! Extremely Highly Recommended.
