Publisher's summary

Audie Award Finalist, Thriller/Suspense, 2014

For 25 years, Robert Crais has written extraordinary novels of crime and suspense. He is "a master of crime fiction" (Associated Press); "his novels get better with every new book" (Portland Oregonian); "Crais is hands-down the world’s greatest crime writer" (The Huffington Post).

But in Suspect, he may have written his most remarkable novel of all.

LAPD cop Scott James is not doing so well, not since a shocking nighttime assault by unidentified men killed his partner, Stephanie, nearly killed him, and left him enraged, ashamed, and ready to explode. He is unfit for duty - until he meets his new partner.

Maggie is not doing so well, either. The German shepherd survived three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan sniffing explosives before she lost her handler to an IED and sniper attack, and her PTSD is as bad as Scott’s.

They are each other’s last chance. He was a young cop on the rise; she was bred to guard and protect. Now they are shunned and shunted to the side. They are suspect. And together they will set out to investigate the one case that no one wants them to touch: the identity of the men who murdered Stephanie.

Nine months and sixteen days later, they remained free. They were still out there.

What they begin to find is nothing like what Scott has been told, and where it will lead them will take them both through the darkest moments of their own personal hells. Whether they will make it out again, no one can say.

Thrilling, emotional, intense, with some of the best characters and well-crafted writing in all of crime fiction, Suspect is further proof that "Crais just keeps getting better" (Publishers Weekly).

A Terrific Mystery With A Canine Twist

Would you consider the audio edition of Suspect to be better than the print version?

This is just a wonderful story with two heros, one human and one K-9, It grabs you from the first sentence and doesn't let up til the last word is spoken. Good narration caps off a stellar performance. And it sheds light on a problem, PTSD, that so many must live with everyday. If you love dogs, this one is for you. If you love crackling good crime stories, this one is for you. If you just like a great yarn, this is for you, for sure. Don't miss it! I really hope Robert Crais brings back this crime fighting duo, Scott and Maggie, in many more stories, More than worth a credit. Get it NOW.

Crais' Best!!

In my opinion this is the best I have read in Robert Crais Collection! As a owner of four German shepherds I find this book particularly enjoyable as he clearly and correctly defines the mindset, stature and performance of the police canines. Kudos to this author for accurately representing the German Shepherd dog and police work. Like this author I am also from Louisiana but I'm also the wife of a retired police officer and as previously mentioned a true lover and owner of German Shepherds! Excellent book!

I Hardly Ever Rate A "5"

"Suspect" is an exception. A dog protagonist? Excellent creativity. All characters well developed and each a meaningful participant. Plot moves smoothly, transitioning well. Can't, won't say more about the story to hold you in .....

Very good narration. Hit the high notes when necessary to lift the suspense. "Suspect" works for me. Thank You Audible.

Loved the dog! Loved the book

Would you consider the audio edition of Suspect to be better than the print version?

Yes,because Mr. Andrews was a great reader.I'm pretty critical,so I don't say that very often.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes, from the first chapter in Afganistan. This book is very suspenseful ,but the wonderful thing about it is the way the author portrays things from a dog's perspective.Sometimes this kind of thing is hokey or sentimental, but not here. Crais obviously understands dogs. I feel sure we will get a sequel to this one. I can't wait.

What does MacLeod Andrews bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He transitions smoothly between man and dog. Each one is distinct and believable. When I listen to an audio book I want to hear a performance. Mr. Andrews gave a performance.Kudos to you Mr. Andrews and to audible for picking a good reader.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I almost did,but I had to go to work.

Suspenseful, uplifting, well done.

Would you listen to Suspect again? Why?

This is a gifted narrator who drew me into every character in the story, including the dog. The author and narrator managed the dog's perspective in such a natural way that anyone who has lived with a dog can relate, and anyone who has not will want to find a canine companion.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Suspect?

Maggie is a wonderful creature. Leland is larger than life. Revealing his true colors at the end of the story was memorable.

Which character – as performed by MacLeod Andrews – was your favorite?

Hard to say. MacLeod Andrews is so talented that I bought I to most of his characters. Bonus points for Budras, Leland, and Darryl's girlfriend.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Never a possibility for me. But it was a book that made me hurry home.

Any additional comments?

In the beginning, Scott was not a sympathetic character. MacLeod Andrews brought him and his story to life.
