Publisher's summary

Michelle Maxwell has just blown her future with the Secret Service. Against her instincts, she let a presidential candidate out of her sight to comfort a grieving widow. Then, behind closed doors, the politician whose safety was her responsibility vanished into thin air.

Living a new life on a quiet lake in central Virginia, Sean King knows how the younger agent feels. He's been there before. In an out-of-the-way hotel eight years earlier, the hard-charging Secret Service man allowed his attention to be diverted for a split second. And the presidential candidate Sean was protecting was gunned down before his eyes.

Now Michelle and Sean are about to see their destinies converge. She has become obsessed with Sean's case. And he needs a friend - especially since a series of macabre killings has brought him under suspicion and prompted the reappearance of a seductive woman he's tried hard to forget.

As the two discredited agents enter a maze of lies, secrets, and deadly coincidences, they uncover a shocking truth: that the separate acts of violence that shattered their lives were really a long time in the making - and are a long way from over....

I liked it!

I lost a lot of sleep listening to the story. The plot and delivery of the story were very intertaining. I'll look for more Baldacci in the future.

Starts Strong, But Choked The Ending

A suspenseful thriller, but the ending is a stretch. Packed with kidnappings, murders and an elaborate chain of events. And, of course, the women are beautiful, smart, and athletic.

Loved the book but the download is corrupt

The story is great and kept me engaged, but the copy of the book was distorted in places. Directly after the epilogue the book repeated and started about 1/3 of the way through the story again.

Baldacci Does It Again

This book was a "page turner" from beginning to end. I listen while at work and was upset because I had five days off and would not get to hear the ending sooner!

Not Baldacci's best

It was hard to figure out what character was talking. The narrator had very little change in voice for any of the characters. Sadly, it really ruins an Audible Book when you have no clue who is talking.

Very Good

One of the better ones I have listened too. I had trouble turning it off until the next day. If you like not knowing who and why the bad guy is until the very end you will enjoy this one.

narrator needs more training

Loved the characters, the story was interesting and complex. look foward to more King and Maxwell. Hopefully, it will be a different narator, wasnt fond with his style. It was difficult to differentiate characters because they all had the same sound. After much rewinding and relistening, I was able to follow. likely will read books if it is the same narrator for future.
